Indianapolis Colts trim roster to 53, only keeping two quarterbacks.

Fresh off a trip back to Indiana, I have returned in time to set up a post for the Colts.  The Colts cut some guys last week to settle in to their 53-man roster for the regular season.  There were some surprises and a couple of shockers in the cuts that opened my eyes.  I want to believe that I would have seen them coming if I had been back in Indiana during the preseason and been able to see more of the games, but I can’t even be confident of that.  Perhaps the biggest shock was the cutting of both Jared “Frisch's” Lorenzen and Quinn Gray.  With Manning taking the preseason off and Sorgi a little nicked up I had thought, as I am sure some of you did, that Gray may be held over and the Colts would go in with three quarterbacks.  Again, Bill Polian is full of surprises.

The Colts cut 75 to 53 Saturday, setting up the roster for the beginning of the regular season.  The guys cut are thus:

Wide receiver Devin Aromashodu, defensive tackle Joe Bradley, defensive end Jeff Charleston, safety Brannon Condren, defensive tackle Dan Davis, offensive tackle Tala Esera, defensive tackle Colin Ferrell, defensive back Brandon Foster, wide receiver Sam Giguere, Gray, defensive end Ben Ishola, wide receiver Onrea Jones, running back Kenton Keith, Lorenzen, offensive tackle Darren Marquez, linebacker Kyle Shotwell, running back

Chad Simpson, tight end Tyrice Thompson, offensive tackle Michael Toudouze and linebacker Victor Worsley.

Of those names, a few stand out.  Gray's stand out, of course, because he was given so many reps in the preseason that it seemed like the Colts were making a spot for him.   Cutting Devon Aromashodu was a huge surprise to me.  When the Colts were coming up lame at the receiver position last year it was Aromashodu who proved to be the most reliable backup.   Cutting him was not on my radar screen.  It means a big vote of confidence to the other parts of the receiving corps that have existed as question marks all off season.  I would suppose that it means they see Marvin as being far enough back to hold his own, Gonzo as far enough along to contribute at the X and Y spots should he be called out of the slot, Pierre Garcon as a contributor immediately as opposed to a project guy, and Roy Hall (who would play either X or Y) as healthy enough to participate in the season since he sat out last season and three games of the preseason with injuries.  The Colts kept former IU receiver and track sprinter Courtney Roby as a returner on the auspices of two huge kick returns in the preseason.  Former returner TJ Rushing was put on IR for a leg.

Two other names that popped out were Jeff Charleston and Mike Toudouze.  Charleston, a backup defensive lineman, showed me a lot of promise last year.  He is real stout, with a helluva bullrush, and I thought he could help out on running situations which the Colts may struggle in given the evaporation of the defensive tackle position.  In the end, Charleston didn't do enough in the preseason to keep his spot, and last year is in the past.  Toudouze was a backup offensive lineman that saw some play over the last couple go rounds and I thought, given the health status on the line, that he might get another shot.

Brannon Condren and Victor Worsley were guys that played last year but got cut.  Worsley got cut because he was hurt and there were healthier guys waiting to take his spot, Condren got cut because there were guys that were above him in the depth chart last year that got hurt and opened a hole for him to play on special teams and little late-game action.  Those guys are healthy this year and he was moved out.

Of those guys, it was Aromashodu that got grabbed the quickest, the Redskins signed him to their practice squad.

lilja_2007_1230_ten_032_macht.jpgThe only movement that can really be considered a blow to the club, though, is the placing of Ryan Lilja (starting left guard) and Tyjuan Hagler (starting strongside linebacker) on the the Physically Unable to Perform list.  That means these guys are sitting for at least six weeks, and that somebody (God knows who) is going to have to spend their rookie season as a starting guard or center under Howard Mudd.  That must be awful, Mudd is only happy at dinner, the rest of the time he is looking for someone to yell at.

Final Thoughts:  To be honest, I thought we would keep a sixth receiver.  Roby clearly took the 5th spot with his returning in the close of the preseason, but the overall feeling in my gut was that Aromashodu had done enough to get another chance and that Hall had done too little to take the 4 spot free and clear.  I understand dropping the QBs since Sorgi was good to go as of the weekend, but my nerves wanted to see a guy stick around.  Just so you know, the third QB on the in house depth chart is punter, Hunter Smith.  He takes more reps at QB of a week than he does as punter.  Guzman and Jordan Senn both kept their linebacker spots, which was nice.  Guzman contributed a bit last year and Senn was strong in the preseason.  The silver lining to the linebacker situation may be that the injury of Tyjuan Hagler will almost certainly insert Clint Sessions as the starting SLB, which is something I lobbied for at the end of last season.  I admire Hagler, but Sessions is bigger and has better striking ability as a tackler.  The starting offensive linemen can be almost anyone at this point, and I will remark on that later in the week.  I suspect to see Pollack and guard and Richards at center against the Bears, but I am reserving judgment for one more day.

Guzman is actually gone already as well. The Colts picked up a DL and a LB from waivers and said goodbye to Guzman and the safety from BC.

I'm pretty surprised that they cut Gray and Devin, but then again, like you said...Polian does it again!

Josh Betts was signed back to the practice squad. He knows the offense as he has been on the practice squad the past couple seasons. So, if an emergency QB is needed, Betts could be the man.
