Bruce Paine (That Boy Needs Therapy) with early week Colts thoughts.

I can't quit my job because people that aren't me now depend on my income.  I can't go back in time despite my belief that there are many eras in the past where a person such as myself would be found more suitable because Sony and Apple have not seen fit to provide me with a F#$%ING TIME MACHINE!  I can't watch television because I don't have cable and the networks don't produce good television that isn't a sport (God knows cable doesn't really commit to the creative process but by comparison...).  I can't find a job that I enjoy or understand because I believed in a baleful image that was eagerly provided by my elders and teachers when I was younger.  I have no control over my own life because suicide seems so...cowardly.  If I didn't find the prospective Colts season so interesting I would have no choice but to turn to soft drugs and alcohol.  Well, lets not count that out just yet...

Last week I went back to Indiana for a bit of a visit.  On the way down I had the pleasure of Jack Cobra and The Lovely Dentist's fine hospitality, of which I am eternally grateful.   It made for a good halfway point and I got to hangout with Jack.  (He likes to point out what furniture came from IKEA and what did not.)  When Saturday went down, Jack was eager to call me and let me know how the Chicago area sports media was salivating at what they saw as a near guarantee of a Bears victory in Indianapolis.  After things have settled down I think the best the Bears can hope for is an opportunity to steal a late victory or keep it close.  Probably not the former, maybe the last.

What folks seem to miss is that, on a pound for pound status, the Colts without Saturday are still a much better team.  On offense, both teams have problems on the line.  For the Colts it is injuries and for the Bears it is mediocrity.  I call it a draw.  But at other positions like quarterback, tailback, tight end, and receiver the Colts are clearly better.  On defense, the Bears are the superior teams at tackle and inside linebacker, maybe outside linebacker, but certainly not at corner or safety and probably not at end.  Though Anderson and Ogunleye may be good (Hell, for run/pass balance Wale may be the best in the business), Freeney and Mathis are a cut above, especially if Freeney is healthy.  Beyond that, the Bears defense has been poor in the preseason where the Colts first stringers have been adequate.  Kicker and returner are the places where the Bears are better clear and away.  These are my thoughts on the Bears coming into town on for the opener.  Does anybody remember what happened to the Saints in the opener last year?  They were coming off of an NFC Champ loss to the Bears and the sky was the limit.  It was a turkey shoot.

Anyway, the offensive line situation may not be the rookie party a lot of folks were fearing.  Phil Wilson, the blogger at indystar.com, may have as much media access to the Colts as anyone.  He said that it is looking like Ugoh, Johnson, Richard, Federkiel, and Diem left to right.  Pollak is a little gimpy and may not be ready, Justice isn't showing enough at guard, and Manning likes Richard so Johnson has the spot at left guard and Federkeil either beat out Justice or was the last man standing.

Bruce, by the encouraging and uplifting nature of that first paragraph, I thought I was going to read that you had become a Browns fan. That's real misery, my friend. But seriously, let me know if you ever find one of those time machines, and I'll come with you. (Ok, maybe not so seriously...).
