I have mentioned before that Jack and I used to play
softball together. We had our warm up
rituals. When I played catcher we worked
out a drill to practice throwing people out at home. That was something we did a lot. Jack would drop a relay intentionally to
sucker guys into going for home. It
worked. It was fun. When I moved around to other positions we
tailored our warm up accordingly. We
also played a lot of basketball together, and a little whiffleball. Throughout all of this we had a lot of
ongoing debates. Perhaps the one that
had no answer, but drew much attention and discourse, had to do with the
concept of teambuilding. Jack and I were
cornerstone players on a team that was always trying to get better. We had a few guys, five or six, that made up
the core of the squad and we were always looking to add guys. The trick was that some guys couldn’t be
relied on, and some guys just weren’t as good as others. Each season we would lose a guy or two, and
have to fill the gap. The problem was
how. Would we look hard for a really
talented player athletically or would we try to find the guy with the best
attitude and spirit? Talent versus
morale is a classic argument.
