It is no secret that I worship the ground that Marvin Harrison walks on. So, I have no idea what to say about the reports circulating that he was involved in a shooting in North Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon. The information that has been released is thin and unrevealing. Bruce Paine is shaken and confused. Apparently a fistfight broke out in a bar Harrison owned and Marv escorted the instigator from the establishment. As near as I can tell, the shooting did not take place int he parking lot, as had been reported, but a block or so down the street. The timeline between the participators leaving the bar and the shooting has not been reported with any accuracy. Some sources say it happened immediately after in the parking lot and yet there are a few reports that say it happened about 20 minutes later down the block. The victim of the shooting was hit in the hand and the gun that fired the shots is registered to Harrison. Marvin claimed the gun had never left his house but it was found at a carwash he owned shortly after. None of this is good. I am embarrassed that my guy was involved in something so sloppy and irresponsible. First, if you skin it, win it. Don't leave them walking. Second, don't skin it if it isn't important. Nothing reported yet seems to indicate that it was important enough to skin it. That is shameful indeed. Third, if you skin it, don't hide it. It just causes trouble, and that is exactly what seems to have happened. I have no idea what Pennsylvania's gun laws are, it may very well be the case that you can shoot somebody there and it isn't against the law. At the very least, though, this smells like reckless endangerment and obstruction. That is not good. If Harrison was not the shooter he was, at the very least, tacitly involved and very irresponsible as a gun owner. Neither of those things are forgivable in my book. It is very shameful for me.

The fight probably broke out because the victim was making fun of Harrison's veiny arms. Cripes--look at that!
Sometimes a player's name is linked to shady/illegal events and it turns out to be all his friends' doing. But if this info is accurate, I don't see any way that Marvin ISN'T involved. Could it be that his quiet demeanor hides a fountain of rage? What does one say to tick off Marvin Harrison?
That he got all his catches on screens. That was how Keyshawn did it on Monday night. Yeah, Marvin is made of strapped iron, that is how a guy that little that weighs a buck eighty survives in the NFL.
I think he is screwed, but who is to say? There is so very little being said, and don't forget that this happened TUESDAY and we just found out about it. Even the Philly papers can't agree on what to say. I think that so little being said is a really bad sign. Marvin may end up being my favorite ex-player. Luckily, Bob Sanders is waiting in the wings to take over the mantle.
for what it's worth, marvin's lawyer is saying that there are a lot of 'inaccuracies' in the reporting thus far. i think so little has been said due to his reputation.
if terrell owens were involved in this, it would be a 24-hour story.
I have been thinking a lot about that, and I can't entirely agree. One can't forget that many of TO's troubles he knowing and actively attempts to inflate by going out and talking to reporters and saying inflammatory things. He actively seeks out reporters to tell his story and pitch his own spin. Marvin doesn't say anything to anybody as a matter of course, so he isn't offering a story to tell. I do think his reputation has bought him something. He doesn't speak to reporters so they aren't bothering to dig at him. If you mean his reputation for philanthropy and good naturedness, I doubt that is holding anyone off trying to find out what happened. When TO goes trade hunting, he shouts it to the whole world, and that drags the story to him. When he calls out his QB, he shouts it to the whole assembled media, and then does sit ups in a circle of reporters. TO wears the jersey to a rival team of the one he is on and calls his own team classless on the radio. Marvin doesn't spit on people and he hasn't been taken to the hospital for a suicide attempt (that I know of). That is why when TO does something it is a 24 hour media blitz. So, I can't entirely agree with your assessment.
well, even if it weren't T.O.
if it were larry fitzgerald or even reggie wayne, i think it would be different. the media loves marvin harrison just like they love T.O. he's a balance to the T.O.'s and chad johnsons of the world. i mean, how many high profile athletes can be involved (even if only tangentially) in a shooting and basically get only 24 hours of press about it?
marvin harrison's one of my favorite players and i hope that he was ultimately no more than a witness, but i still recognize that he's getting a wee bit of wiggle room due to the fact that he's marvin harrison and there is no desire to hang him out dry. and don't get me wrong, he deserves it. but, it would be nice if more people were given this benefit of the doubt.
I hear you, I just can't agree entirely. I still wonder if the lack of press is because people are giving him the benefit of the doubt or because he just won't say anything.
The press used to give JFK a pass on women because they liked him. Everybody knows that, but the press is different now, and I am not convinced. I think they are digging and not getting anything, or they know more than they are saying and not saying anything because it isn't that interesting.
more than anything, i think it's the police department that isn't saying anything.
i hate to bring up T.O. again, but the dallas cops were more than happy to tell the whole world that he tried to kill himself (and we all saw how that turned out).
Paine...the real question becomes: Why is a good guy wideout playing bouncer at a bar in the worst neighborhood in America? Seriously! Thats the news on the street these days...killing in Philadelphia is pretty much the norm and the word on the street is your boy, owner, operator and gun collector at his spot.
Not sure what the hell is going on with that dude. Hopefully it works out for him. But...DAMN!
This whole story keeps getting more weird after I read yesterday that this all may have stemmed from a 'hit' being put out on Harrison because of something his Dad did in jail....Did you know his Dad was in jail?
I was sent the link today, but don't want to give it too much credence, yet. I guess Russell has been blasted in the Philly area for making the statement. He made the statement on a Miami area show, and all the rest of the Philly media is saying its BS. You would have to ask Ken Rudolph about the reaction.
I know that Harrison's father was out of the picture by the time Marvin was a teenager. He was raised by a mother (Linda) that worked three jobs and that is evidently why he is not very vocal and is very quiet about his family. He is pretty close with his mom. She is also active in charity work with his organizations and the NFL charities. That is about what I know about his personal life.

First of all...i'm not going to believe anything Keith Russell says. He's a weekend fill in on an ABC affiliate.
I think Sal Pal reported that he pats guys down entering his club.
Marvin lives a very strange life. Philly cops and the city are in a tough situation. The fact that this gun is seen as the type of weapon that is specifically designed to kill cops (penetrate kevlar at up to 45 feet) it could be a long off-season for Marvin.
Lots of dust flying around here...
