Yeah, it's gonna happen. Former Cardinals CF Jim Edmonds is on his way to signing with the Cubs and....it's actually a smart move by the Cubs. That was difficult to write.
I really, really, really don't like Edmonds, but you know what? I want to win a fucking pennant. I can taste it in my mouth with this team and it's time to do whatever it takes to get there. I can bite my tongue for a little while if it means in the end that the Cubs are in a better position to win a title....and Edmonds puts the Cubs in that position, sadly.
Look, he's not going to come in here and play every day but he is a better alternative, right now, than Felix Pie. Besides that, he's going to sign for the pro-rated veterans minimum for the rest of the season and if he can give the Cubs anything....anything....it will be worth it. If he gives the Cubs nothing, it still allows Pie to go back to Iowa and work on his game before being called up after Edmonds is released. The Cubs need a left-handed hitting back-up outfielder and now they are going to go out and get one since their in-house option isn't really working out.

I hate Edmunds more than any other baseball player. I won't get into the reasons why. It's all Pie's fault. He's officially in my doghouse and I don't care when/if he comes out.
Cards fans aren't that excited about this either. Terrible to see a beloved figure sully himself. ;) It will be hard to see him in Cub blue.
I don't like this move. If he isn't going to play everyday (which he shouldn't) why not get Barry Bonds instead. I know Edmonds is coming at a very cheap price, but I don't think dude can do it anymore. Maybe coming to a team better then the Padres with postseason aspirations will help get him gear.
I mentioned Bonds briefly last week when Piniella was screaming for a power hitting left handed bat but I don't think it's going to get done. Bonds really can't play the OF and the Cubs are already worried about their defense so he's out.
With Edmonds in the fold the Cubs can keep Fukudome in RF where he's playing well and slide Johnson to LF in the later innings when Soriano must come out.
It's not as if Edmonds will come in and play every day (I hope) but to give him the starts that Pie is taking now would be OK as long as a major reason for it is so Pie can go back to Iowa to learn to take some walks. Piniella can throw Edmonds in the 5th spot in the lineup and hope that Soto provides some security while moving Fukudome to 2nd....which is a move we've talked about before.
Also, if this Edmonds thing falls through look for Micah Hoffpauir to get a long look now that he's off the DL in Iowa.

I hope Edmonds works out...I don't think it will but ya never know. I also disagree with taking Soriano out in a close game. If the game goes into extras I'd much rather have Soriano up there to take his ab then say Reed Johnson. However this all plays out it is going to be an exciting summer in chicago!
you enjoy Soriano's defense or do you just enjoy pain?
I enjoy his throwing arm, I enjoy his bat, I don't enjoy that little hop (does he still do that?). All I'm saying is that if Wood gives up a 1 run lead on a solo shot, I'd rather have Soriano at the plate in extra innings then Reed Johnson.
I hate the fact that Jimmy Baseball could be wearing the small bears uni.
As a life long Cards fan, it's a shame that #15 can't finish his career with the Cardinals (or any other team but the Cubbies).
What a weird site that will be when Jimmy makes a diving play in CF to rob a Cardinal.
Enjoy the half shirts, frosted hair, needless dives, weird uppercut swing and amazing and clutch plays in center. I'll never forget the HR to beat the Astros in the game 6 of the NLCS... Wish I could find that online, the MLB page for it isn't working.
Gotta like that catch Edmonds had in Houston going up the hill. you can hate him all you want, but getting to that ball showed that he came to Chicago to play for the Cubs
