One Will be Left Standing

ncaafinal.jpgWell, it all comes down to the Kansas vs. Memphis game tonight. Both teams are chock full of talent. Both teams can score. Both teams can shut you down. Both teams can run for days. Both teams have been dominant for nearly the entire season. This has all the makings of a great game. Two teams without one true superstar that rely on their depth to be their strength. Two teams that are what college basketball should be about.

At the beginning of the season I thought Kansas had the most talent in the nation, but not the best coach. I'm not sure Kansas has a player on their team that will make multiple NBA All-Star Game's or be a lottery pick but they do have a roster that has played together for awhile.

I wasn't sure how Memphis would do because I didn't know much about their Fab Frosh PG Derrick Rose and they always seem to be a team that falls short. It turns out that Rose makes Mike Conley look like a second round draft pick and the rest of the squad is hungry. This year their foul shooting scared me but I guess if it's just foul shooting that scares you....there isn't much to be scared about. They come out like a bunch of wolves that have just been let out of their cage and are looking for anything to eat. They are aggressive, fast and insatiable in their need to dominate. They are the best team in the nation. 80-72 Memphis.

Jack, if Memphis wins the title tonight I am not sure I can ever watch NCAA basketball with the same zeal again.
Memphis is everything that is wrong with high level college basketball. It is the real-life case scenario for the movie Blue Chips.
From laundering money through mediaries at prep schools to AAU programs, to John Calapari's unseemly relationship with World Wide Wes (a professional meeting man who happens to hold a high profile running with the who's who of professional basketball and shoe companies), to placing academically defunct students in horrible prep schools so that a kid could earn easy grades to become an NCAA qualifier, to plenty more.
This team may be full of really talented players, but it would then prove that you could buy the NCAA title, and nobody would care about it.

can't you say that about most college programs?
i'm thinking memphis will win. kansas really busted their asses against carolina, even if it was two days ago and these are boundless college kids. they'll have to come out with the same intensity as they had on saturday, and i don't see them keeping that up. nevermind that memphis is probably the better team, anyway.
i wonder if they lost a little bit of that chip on their should since most people are picking them to win, now. that's something to watch. plus, derrick rose apparently is having some stomach issues, probably from drinking chocolate milk...

You can say those things about some college programs; however, I don't think that it permeates as many programs as one would believe. Yes, every team "cheats" on some level, but Calipari's indiscretions as known within the profession are just absurd.
On the other topic I think the game should be really good. I think that as much as people are talking about the offensive fire power that both teams have, the defenses are going to make the difference. I am interested to see if Kansas's guards can really contain Rose, becuase he is unbelieveable. Also, I would like to see the Rush/CDR match-up. Lastly, can Memphis's bigs weather the depth and superiority of Kansas's frontline. I think Kansas is the all-around best team, but it would not surprise me one bit if Memphis wins this one.

No more chocolate milk....that run is over.

On some other news: Has anyone heard the numbers being thrown around by Oklahoma State in the Bill Self sweepstakes? I am hearing from some coaches that a deal in the neighborhood of $30-$40 mill. It must be nice to have a ridiculously rich booster who only wants to give money to the athletics department.

$4 mil a year, pretty crazy. OK State does have a pretty nice basketball atmosphere on campus but it's obviously a step down from Kansas.
