As Erin said yesterday in the comments, the Cubs had the opportunity to win their 10,000th game as a franchise last night and they did it with a 7-6 win over the Rockies in 10 innings. I'm not sure what 10,000 wins means other than that the Cubs have been around forever but it sure is a nice round number. Still, I'd be willing to give up 8 or 9 thousand of those wins for a few championships, but that's just me. Onto the game!!
Rich Hill took the mound for the Cubs last night and was cruising along through five innings with a 3-0 lead when the wheels fell off in the sixth. Hill started the inning by giving up a lead-off homer to Clint Barmes and then was pulled after he walked the next batter, Todd Helton. All in all, it was a decent outing for Hill as he walked four batters but only gave up two runs on 84 pitches. When Hill went out, Michael Wuertz came in and all Hell broke loose as the Rockies exploded for four more runs in the inning to take a 5-3 lead. At that time it looked like the Cubs were probably done.....actually I should say that other Cubs teams would have been done at this point.
The Cubs tacked on a run in the seventh to make it 5-4 on a Derrek Lee run scoring single. Lee had four hits on the night and looks to be back in the groove after being off a little bit during the homestand. The relievers for both teams took care of business until the Cubs came up in the ninth and Aramis Ramirez, Mr. Clutch himself, belted a two-run bomb to put the Cubs on top and on their way to victory......or so I thought.
Kerry Wood was brought in to close the door in the ninth and looked to be well on his way to doing so by getting the first two outs but he gave up a single to Scott Podsednik and then a triple to Ryan Spilsborghs and the game was tied at 5. Just when you thought the Cubs were going to be able to pull out a victory.....These are the Cubs and this should have come as no surprise to any Cubs fans.
Thankfully the Cubs have played very well in extra innings this season and continued to do so last night as Ryan Theriot slapped a single to right in the 10th inning that gave the Cubs the lead. Carlos Marmol was brought in to turn out the lights and he did just that as the Cubs won their sixth straight game.
D-Lee and A-Ram weren't the only hitting stars for the Cubs as Geovony Soto had four hits of his own and Ronny Cedeno continued to produce with two more hits to move his average up to .375 on the season. The bullpen was shaky at best but Bob Howry did throw a scoreless inning so that's encouraging.
The Cubs are now 15-6 on the season and move closer to the coveted "10 games over .500" mark. Once teams hit that mark they usually either take off or they tank.....it's best to find this out in April.

You are 100% correct, 10,000 is a nice round number.
It should never be a surprise to see Podsednik getting a big hit against the Cubs. It seems like he ALWAYS is getting it done against the Northsiders.
Still, 10,000 in the win column is better than being in Philly, where they're 10,000 in the down column.
ha! that's actually the same thing I was telling a guy here at work this morning about Pods. I don't know what it is about the guy but he kills the Cubs.
Morales threw an interesting game for the Rockies because the Cubs were waiting him out for walks but he never seemed to get there (one walk in six innings). They were still able to get his pitch count up (109 total) and they scored four runs off of the Colorado bullpen.
Day game today on WGN but I have a job interview so I will probably miss most of it. I'm thinking that A-Ram will play today since he's really heating up. It should be interesting to see how/if Cedeno gets in the lineup today because I think Lou will want to play Pie in CF. I know Cedeno spent some time in the OF in Spring Training so I wonder if he'll ever see time in LF while Soriano is out.
Cubs 10,000.
Cardinals 9,856.
'Course, you do have a 6 year head start..... :)
