Maybe these Cubs aren't so different? Just when you think the team is about to take off and run away with the NL Central they go and lose two out of three to probably the worst team in the National League. It wasn't a good weekend but it still deserves a rundown so off we go.
Friday.......Despite Reed Johnson making just about the greatest catch I've ever seen and Ryan Dempster having another solid outing (7IP, 2 ER), the Cubs lost a heartbreaker to the Nationals on Friday as Bob Howry gave up a game winning two-run homer to Wil Nieves and lost 5-3. The Cubs had their chances in this game but they left 18 men on base as they were stymied by Odalis Perez.
Saturday....I told you to watch this game because Carlos Zambrano was going to throw a no-hitter and while he gave up five hits over seven innings, it was one of his best outings of the season as the Cubs won 7-0. Big Z had all of his pitches going on Saturday and was able to work through some rough spots with the help of a couple of double plays. Derrek Lee was the offensive hero for the Cubs as he was 2-3 with 3 RBI's for the Cubs. Geovony Soto was the opposite of an offensive hero as he struck out five times running his consecutive streak of strikeouts to eight.
Sunday.....After I wrote that I knew nothing about Nationals SP John Lannon on Friday I went ahead and did some research on him and figured the Cubs would have issues with him. Not only did they have issues with him but they had major issues as he mixed speeds effectively all day as the Nationals won 2-0. I'm not sure if the Cubs had get away day syndrome going on or what but they looked pretty feeble all day long. Still, Ted Lilly had another solid outing and gave the Cubs a chance to win.
A couple of balls hit in different directions and the Cubs could have come away with a sweep in this series but it wasn't meant to be. The bullpen is going to start giving Cubs fans heartburn, if it hasn't already, as they've now blown five saves on the season. Michael Wuertz and Howry are the main culprits as the Cubs must get them on track soon.

Despite their early record, the Nationals are not the worst team in the league. That being said, the Cubs should easily have won more than 1 of these games. They had more than their fair share of opportunities. But journeyman 4th-string catchers don't hit walk-off home runs every day. The Cubs have no reason to panic. World Series this year, baby.
I'm not sure how you can say the Nationals aren't the worst team in the league. Not only do they have the worst record, but they run out the worst day to day lineup in the league. They have Felipe Lopez and Christian Guzman hitting 1-2 and Nick Johson hitting cleanup. That's not a good team. Their pitching staff borders on horrendous as they have maybe two guys that could play for the Cubs. This is a bad, bad team.
Still, nothing to worry about. These things happen.
Also, your blog is pretty funny. I'd recommend everyone click on his name and head over there to check it out.
Big Z was effectively wild on Saturday. I want to say he walked 4 guys and hit another but still didn't give up a run. That is winning without your best stuff right there.
there was an odd zone being called on Saturday. I thought he had really good stuff but was being squeezed by the ump. He had five walks total on the season coming into the game
