Weekend Shenanigans: St. Patty Edition

chicago-river.jpgShamrocks, basketball, green beer, tornado, NCAA, leprachaun's, No Country For Old Men, Guiness, chicks in green, The Gargantuan, 3 AM coffee, Asian guy in a suit and gin and tonics. That right there sums up my weekend. OK OK....I'm off  just a bit there.......as I did not have any green beer this weekend. What you say? How can you go to Chicago and not have at least one green beer while celebrating St. Patty's Day? I don't know how it happened, but that's how it went down. I know one item that I'm pretty happy didn't make the list and that is jail as Jack had to mention to me a couple of times throughout the weekend. But enough about my own shenaniganery over the weekend and onto what happened in the sports universe.

March Madness - Whose in and whose out? That's what it was all about yesterday. Georgia ruffled some feathers with their unlikely SEC tournament run. Ohio St. Ole Miss, Syracuse and Arizona St. are all feeling the brunt of being left out this morning. IU is looking to once again lose in the first round as an 8 seed! UNC is our overall #1 and Memphis, UCLA and Kansas rounded out the other #1's. The tourney committee did their jobs once again and once again are being grilled by all the pundits. Should we expand the tournament? Should there be some set rules to follow? Should Dick Vitale be condemened from TV? Yes, Yes, and Yes. So here we are on the brink of the most exciting few weeks of the year. Whose going to take home the crown? No one knows. Whose going to put on that glass slipper this year? No one knows. But it sure is going to be fun to watch. Enjoy!

Dickie V Can't Be Stopped - If you watched the ESPN coverage after the bracket was released yesterday then you might have seen intelligent human beings such as Bob Knight, Jay Bilas, Hubert Davis, Digger Phelps and Rece Davis. You may have also seen the enigma that is Dick Vitale on the telecasts. Vitale was filling all of our ears with useless knowledge while looking older than death itself. Once the subject of IU was broached Vitale went off on some kind of tangent which included him saying that IU should re-hire Knight and such and such. It was really a great piece of TV as during the rant the ESPN cameras rolled to Knight who looked like he would like nothing better than to strangle the life out of Vitale. It was a special moment....really.

WOODS - How good is this freaking guy? Seriously! He won again. That makes it something like 5 in a row, 7 of 8 PGA events, 9 of 10 worldwide events. I don't know what else to say. Other players must recoil in fear when they hear that Tiger has decided to grace a tournament with his presence. God he's good.

Speaking of Good - How about those Rockets? Still chugging along without Yao Ming. 22 is a large number. They now sit at the top of the standings after beating the LA Lakers on Sunday. They just need to take this momentum into the playoffs and then maybe McGrady will finally win a playoff series. That'll be a tough task to handle in the West.

168 Points....Really? - The Denver Nuggets averaged 42 points per quarter against the Seattle Supersonics on Sunday. 42! They ended the game with 168 points. Yeah you're thinking it was an OT game right? Wrong....that was all in regulation. 48 minutes of ball or if you'd like to put it this way 3.5 points per minute. The Nuggets had 8 players in double figures with Carmello and AI leading the way with 26 and 24 respectively. 168 WOW....

Cardinals Update.....Late - I meant to write this up on Friday, but had other things to do so sorry. The Cardinals in trying to deal with a starting rotation that is tattered signed Kyle Lohse to a 1 year deal. The deal is worth $4.25 million with incentives. The incentives are based on the number of innings pitched and can total and extra $500K should he reach 200 innings of work. This may be a decent pick up for the Cardinals. Lohse hasn't wowed anyone that past few years, but he has put up league average type numbers while pitching in hitter's ballparks. Really the Cardinals just need someone who can take the mound every four or five days at the moment. They got Lohse on the cheap compared to what he initially asked for after last season. In other news, Cardinals team president Mark Lamping is leaving the club to head up the New Meadowlands Stadium Company. Lamping headed a very sucessful 13 year run for the organization and will be missed.
