Weekend Shenanigans

bush 1st pitch.jpgAfter last week's festivities in the NCAA tournament everyone was looking forward to this weekend's matchups. I think everyone was expecting more upsets, surprises and frantic finishes. As it turns out, only two of the ten games from Thursday on were decided by less than 10 points. Not quite the excitement we were looking for was it?

That's exactly how I've felt watching the new HBO mini-series John Adams the last two weeks. The first couple of episodes were very good, but the last two have left me looking for more excitement. The show pretty much completely skipped over anything to do with the Revolutionary War and instead focused on Adams diplomatic ventures in Europe. Sure that's what actually happened in Adams life, but show me some cannons firing, show me some muskets being loaded and show me some Red Coats being stuck with a bayonet. I'm not asking for much here! I'm hoping the final three installments bring the series back into an interesting area. Adams is now the VP and soon to be the President. I'm looking forward to his skirmish with once close confidant Thomas Jefferson and their inevitable make up. Onto the Shenanigans!

#1's Are All In - I have always found it amazing that all four #1 seeds had never made the Final Four in a NCAA tournament. How does that not happen in the long history of the tournament? After last night that can never be said again as Kansas, UNC, Memphis and UCLA all survived the weekend to make it to the Final Four showdown next weekend in San Antonio. As I said in the intro it was a mostly uneventful path this weekend for these four juggernauts. Only Kansas had to put up much of a fight against the upstart Davidson Wildcats. UNC and Memphis appear to be the favorites going in as they put up very impressive games this week to advance. I'm putting my money on UNC as I haven't seen anyone that can stop them. Everyone on their team is clicking on all cylinders and it looks like it will take a huge effort from any team to stop them. Some key storylines entering the Final Four are going to be: Roy Williams vs. Kansas; Memphis finally gettiing over the hump; Bill Self being able to coach in big games; UCLA making three straight Final Fours.

Curry Staying Put - Darling of the tournament, Stephen Curry has already voiced his intentions to stay at Davidson next season. From my point of view he is staying for two main reasons. One, he needs vindication for not taking the potential game winning shot against Kansas on Sunday and two, he needs to add 20 pounds to his frame so he will not be torn in half by Dwight Howard and the like in the NBA. It will be good to see him back in the college game next year. He will surely have a much larger spotlight on him. We'll  see how he reacts to all the new attention.

Welcome Back, MLB - What I would consider the official MLB season opener happened last night as the Atlanta Braves competed against the Washington Nationals in the brand spanking new Nationals Park. Let's just consider the Red Sox/Athletics Japan deal a joke. Sure the games count in the standings, but it was still exhibition baseball. Back to the real game. It's nice to see the Nationals get a new stadium. I went to a game at RFK last year and let's just say I was not impressed. What a horrible stadium. Hopefully the new stadium will bring the Nationals into a new era of improved baseball. It worked last night as they beat the Braves 3-2 with a game winning home run by Ryan Zimmerman in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Banning Long Hair? - A couple of items to be reviewed at the upcoming NFL owners meetings are the playoff seedings and players with long hair. The NFL is considering the ban of long hair for the upcoming season. This comes after a year or two of grumbling on the subject. The basis of the argument came to be upon a fateful tackle made by Larry Johnson in 2006. Follwoing an interception made by Troy Polamalu, Johnson pulled Polamalu to the ground by his flowing locks of hair streaming out the back of his helmet. It looked painful and barbaric, but when you're on a football field you are expected to enact such feats. Players safety isn't the only thoughts on this subject. The fact that their hair either totaly or partially obscures NFL logos and players names and numbers is also of concern. The measure will allow players to tuck their hair into their helmets. I'm all for this as I don't really want to see a bushell of hair flowing out of a players helmet.

Baseball's Waning Popularity? - Apparently only 38% of Americans are looking forward to the World Series this year!

Mr. Basketball Shoots Away Award - Georgia Mr. Basketball Al-Faouq Aminu and Georgia Tech recruit may have just shot his way out of his precious award. Aminu apparently shot a woman with a BB gun on March 14th. He was given the Mr. Basketball award on March 23. No announcements have been made, but it appears that the award could be revoked. Smooth move there bud.....

Baseball is dead everywhere but on the East Coast and Chicago. It's only not obvious yet because the media is on the East Coast.

Didn't they just have like 117,000 in the Coliseum to watch an exhibition game?

Dodgers were second in MLB in attendance last season. Angels were fifth. Giants were 7th. Houston was 10th. San Diego was 13th. Seattle was 16th. All West of the Mississippi. All in the top half of attendance except Seattle.
