Cedeno Makes Team, Murton Does Not

ronnycedeno.1.jpgYou can file this under, "What?" as the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Ronny Cedeno and Mike Fontenot made the Cubs squad but Matt Murton and Alex Cintron did not.

I can understand the Cedeno move since he was playing well at the end of Spring but to bring Fontenot, who still has minor league options left and hit .265 this Spring, to Chicago to back up 2B/SS is ludicrous to me. Especially since those are positions Cedeno and Mark DeRosa can back up as well. The Cubs need Murton (.344 spring average) to spell Alfonson Soriano and help hit against lefties when Kosuke Fukudome needs a day off. I guess you can put DeRosa in the outfield but then I'm guessing Cedeno takes over at second base and I think Murton is a better hitting replacement than Cedeno, no?

I'm thinking that Murton and his agent demand a trade immediately at this point since the Cubs have been screwing around with him for almost two years. Any team that gets him is going to be happy if they put him in left field. The Cubs are really misusing the resources they have on this team.

Again, this is an initial report and until the Opening Day comes around things can change but this isn't a good move by the Cubs. I'm just not seeing how this makes sense, do any of you?

I have read with great interest the arguments for
Murton on the Cubs. I agree that he is good clutch
hitter, but his fielding is for the birds. If you
put the ball into his glove, he still could drop
it and if he gets anywhere near the wall, forget it. For a major or minor leager. he should know how to field a ball.....not Murton. For that reason alone, he should be in the minors to learn
how to field.

His fielding isn't great, like you say, but he's been rated as an average ML outfielder, which is exactly where Johnson has been rated. I'm not sure any more time in the minors is going to make him into more of a fielder than he already is.

Is he a good OF, no? Is he more valuable to the Cubs than Fontenot? I think he is. Would Murton be better suited to play in the AL or on a lower-tier ML team where he could play every day? Absolutely.

Jack, I cannot stand Cedeno; I really think that he could possibly be the worst professional baseball player in the world. He should never make a AA roster, let alone a Major League roster.

I understand that a lot of Cubs fans remember back to when Cedeno struggled as a 23-year old but he absolutely dominated the minors as he hit.359 last season. He's playing well this Spring, as a 25-year old, so let's not give up on him just yet or burn him at the stake for what he did two years ago. It will be tough for him since he won't be playing every day but since he's out of options, and so talented, the Cubs really didn't have any choice but to keep him on the 25-man roster.
