I wrote about it in a joking manner last week, but it looks like an actual reporter is hearing rumors about Scott Skiles ending up at IU. (Thanks for the link from esteemed commenter Hank)
Look for Scott Skiles to become the next Indiana men's basketball coach, with assistant Dan Dakich the interim coach for the rest of the season if Kelvin Sampson
is replaced this week, as expected. Skiles, 43, was born in LaPorte,
Ind., and in 1982, as a senior, he scored 39 points to lead Plymouth
High School to the Indiana state championship before going on to an
All-America career at Michigan State, where he became the school's
all-time leading scorer.
That is coming from Charley Waters of the Pioneer Press out of the Twin Cities (Minn.). I don't know anything about Mr. Waters but the rest of his column seemed pretty legit so.....
We already covered Skiles and what he could/couldn't bring to IU the rest of the season, but maybe this rumor is gaining some speed as the IU Internal Investigation creeps closer to the end of its seven day window.
I'm still hearing differing rumors about assistant coaches Ray McCallum or Dan Dakich taking over the team as early as tomorrow night, so keep your ears open.

I hate to say I told you so...
Do you know something or were you just throwing it out there?
I was just throwing it out there. Nobody was talking about him as an option and to me it just made too much sense.
Yeah, I totally forgot about the dude.
He's been in Bloomington a lot lately...
That's because he lives there.
I believe he doesn't actually go 'in' to Bloomington too often since he doesn't live in the downtown area (used loosely) and the GM has reported seeing him 'in' town more often lately.
I hate to break it to everyone, but Charley Walter, the "real reporter" from the link, is a hack. he just spouts off random things with big names. he also broke Tony Dungy leaving the Colts (this was the week before their Super Bowl) to ocach the Minnesota Gophers. And Flip Saunders was going to coach the Gophers according the Walters. He's an old coot and nothing more...
Don't you need a degree to coach college basketball?
I believe Skiles does not have one.
I think I've seen this move before. Successful at first in the pros. Then gets fired. After that the person takes over a high level college program and fails miserably. Could this have Bill Callahan written all over it?
Based on the Damon Bailey autobiography that I read, hiring Skiles would seriously alienate a lot of the basketball alumni. Kent Benson's head might explode.
Maybe he could hire Lawrence Funderburke and Luke Recker as assistant coaches.
just curious, but what did the Bailey autobiography say about Skiles?
Damon Bailey is a whiny bitch. He couldn't even beat Bloomfield his senior year.
I'm trying to remember exactly, but I think they only time their careers overlapped was when he was a freshman and Skiles was a senior, and he wrote about how badly the other players on the team wanted to beat Michigan State that year just because of Skiles.
I think he went on to talk about how Skiles was heavily recruited by IU, but in the end told Knight to basically eff himself and then went to Michigan State. It's been a few years since I read the book.
Ah, see I thought Knight backed off of Skiles in the end because of his legal issues and MSU came by and picked up the pieces. Pretty interesting. I was reading some stuff about Skiles at MSU and he was pretty much like J.J. Redick in the way all the opposing teams and fans hated him. Almost 28 points per game his senior year though, pretty good.
Jack Cobra is correct - they actually mention Skiles' recruitment in John Feinstein's best-seller, "A Season on the Brink" and Knight suggests that he would never have a troublemaker like Skiles in his program, even if he admired the guts with which he competed.
Okay, then. Thanks for the pick up. It's been several years since I read the Bailey book, but I remember that Skiles was not liked in the IU locker room.
That's a case of where something I read a really, really long time ago sticks in my memory and it sneaks out at times. Very lucky memory on my part.
All I can remember about Skile's in college was after he took Antoinne Joubert to school, "Show me what you got fat man." I still laugh about that.
