Cubs Prepare for First Game of Spring

murton.30.jpgThe Cubs open their Arizona schedule with the Giants on Thursday and for those of you who are keeping score at home, here is the Cubs lineup and projected pitchers.

Shortstop Ryan Theriot will lead off followed by third baseman Ronny Cedeno, right fielder Kosuke Fukudome, first baseman Derrek Lee, left fielder Matt Murton, catcher Geovany Soto, Cintron at second and center fielder Felix Pie.

Ryan Dempster will start the first game, and he was scheduled to throw two innings. He'll be followed by Sean Gallagher. Other pitchers available include Neal Cotts, Jose Ceda, Carmen Pignatiello, Jose Ascanio and Kevin Hart.
Ah yes, here come the days when you'll need your scorecard to keep track of who the heck is out on the field. No need to read anything into Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez being out of the lineup, it's the Spring...their at bats will come. Keep reading for more Cubs news from yesterday.

sorianolookinggood.jpgGive Me My Money, Man: Cubs GM Jim Hendry is in the last year of his contract and with the Cubs being up for sale....no one is really sure what is going to happen. Lou Piniella is pulling for Hendry to be re-signed, or extended, as am I. The Cubs lost John McDonough last off-season because of the ownership mumbo jumbo and I'd hate to see them lose another valued employee like Hendry because of it.

Heart of the Matter: The good news is that Mark DeRosa underwent tests yesterday in Chicago and should be back in camp on Monday.  The bad news is that he still might have outpatient surgery:

Among the possible treatments for such conditions is an outpatient surgery called catheter ablation, in which electrode catheters are used to destroy the small area of abnormal tissue causing the irregular impulses in the heart, a procedure said to have a 98 percent success rate.
Without Unions, We Die: For those of you wondering who the Cubs Union Rep is....it's Ted Lilly and he's all for blood testing in MLB.

Running Down a Dream: Alfonso Soriano isn't going to be running through any walls, but he's hoping to get a little better at running into, or close, to them. After struggling with the brick wall and ivy at Wrigley last season, Soriano is taking a lot of time this Spring to work on his defense on the warning track while dealing with the wall(s).

The Title is the Story: For those of you looking for a good Fukudome/Ichiro story, check out this link which possibly has the greatest title for a post ever.
