The Heisman Trophy Goes To.....

tebow.jpgI'm not much of a college football fan when Notre Dame isn't good, so....I didn't catch as many games this season as I usually do. Still, I'm intrigued by how the Heisman Trophy winner rarely seems to pan out in college and how everyone thinks 'their guy' should win it. I've seen a lot of biased reactions throughout the blogosphere, but none as strong as when it comes to this trophy.

I firmly believe the Heisman Trophy is an overrated award that goes to the player with the most hype in college football. Of course the player has to put up good stats, but what it all comes down to is name recognition and hoping that there isn't anyone in your region good enough to steal votes from you. Yeah, those are my feelings.....

Anyways, the four finalists for the Heisman were announced yesterday and they are....QB Tim Tebow (Florida), RB Darren McFadden (Arkansas), QB Colt Brennan (Hawaii) and QB Chase Daniel (Missouri). Yeah, nothing new there. To me it looks like one, and maybe two, of these guys will actually have a productive NFL career....Pretty lethargic group there. I would have liked to have seen Glen Dorsey from LSU invited, but I don't have a vote. Still, I feel the need to run down to finalists for you.

Blah, blah, blah....Tebow is going to win this award. He is the most visible player in college football and he has the stats to back it up (22 rushing and 20 passing touchdowns). Florida isn't playing for the national championship or anything like that, but Tebow has carried this team through an extremely difficult SEC schedule. He'll win this year and probably next year too. Also, he's left handed, which means you can't trust him

McFadden won't win the award because Arkansas wasn't that good this season, although he'll probably be the best NFL player out of this bunch. He was the runner-up for the Heisman last season and he'll be heading into the NFL Draft this Spring, so he'll miss out on carrying around this ridiculous trophy. Good for him. Something that most people don't know about McFadden is that his favorite meal is Chicken McNuggets.

Brennan is a product of the system he is playing in. David Klingler, Akili Smith, blah, blah, blah....all the same. It's great that he led his team to an undefeated record, but his stats as a Junior were better than his stats this season. He'll be drafted and get a chance to start a game or two in the NFL but that's about it. Brennan has also impregnated 14 women while in Hawaii for college.

Daniel is the darkhorse in this race. A player that most people hadn't heard of before this season, he went out and helped lead Missouri to a #1 ranking before they lost to Oklahoma.  Daniel is only 6 feet tall, so he's not going to make it in the NFL. A little know fact here, Daniel owns a race horse and it's name is Eugene.

it's interesting about Dorsey. He played half the year injured and still was third on the team in tackles and 2nd in sacks and TFL's. I wonder how good he would have been had he not been injured. However, he shouldn't be going to New York based on those stats or his potential.

Tebow is the guy.

Cowherd tried to make some convaluted argument about value to the team and discounted Tebow cause he said Florida was so stocked with talent, they'd have won without him. I totally disagree as the guy accounted for 22/37 rushing td's and all 29 passing. He carried that team.

McFadden will be the best pro but will end up 2nd in the voting, Brennan, and then Daniel.

Saw some of Brennan late last weekend against Washington in a big comeback and he made some big time throws. He's got a chance to be the only other good nfler in the bunch.

The quality of qb's is so poor in the nfl today that he could move into the 1st round. I can probably list at least ten teams that would/should draft him including most of the NFC north and south. Brohm, Woodson, Ryan (who they say is the most NFL ready)and Brennan will be the top four. I'm not sold on Woodson and Ryan either(especially after his late season crappers against FSU and Vo Tech).

I'm not sold on drafting any QBs in the NFL Draft during the first few rounds. It's such a crapshoot.

yeah you are probably right - I saw mock draft that had Ryan, Brohm and Woodson in the 1st, no other qb taken til the third with Eric Ainge (who sucks) and Joe Flacco from Delaware (Pitt transfer). Scary thing is PSU's guy-Morelli could get drafted.

are you sure it isn't his nose that might be drafted? that guy has a schnoze on him...

i can't say i have a problem with any of the candidates, probably because i don't care about any of them. colt brennan is what, 26 years old? he's supposed to be a good college QB. daniels has the best shot at being a good NLF QB. tebow... well, he's getting more toned, florida ass than i ever have or will, so good for him, too. dennis dixon should have been a finalist. you saw what happened to oregon after he went down. there's also that kid down at UCF that racked up more rushing yards than anyone not named barry sanders. no one even mentions him.

Kevin Smith (UCF) has been mentioned by Mark May and Co. on who got the shaft. Tebow will win hands down. One-because he deserves it. Two-because of the most exposure. When universities or atletic depts. started marketing their players for the Heisman using billboards that was when I thought the award diminished in meaing.
