Patriots Lining Up To Improve

mcfadden.jpgThe NFL is coming down its final stretch run and that's fine and good, but my compadres over at Arin It Out and Tremendous Upside Potential have me scratching for some NFL Draft news with their excellent updated Mock Drafts. In an effort to soothe that itch, I've been searching around the Internet for some news on who is going to take who and I came across this little nugget about the Patriots and Arkansas super-stud Darren McFadden....

The Patriots had just beaten the Dallas Cowboys in October and were celebrating in their popcorn-strewn locker room when head coach Bill Belichick addressed the team.

He was happy that the Patriots rallied for a 48-27 win, but disappointed that not everyone was healthy enough to play. According to sources, the focus of his wrath was running back Laurence Maroney [stats] [stats], whom Belichick derisively referred to only as “No. 39,” admonishing him to toughen up and get on the field where his team needed him.

While Maroney has tantalized with his talent, he has yet to meet the expectations bestowed upon him when he was selected No. 21 overall in the 2007 draft. He arrived in Foxboro stamped by Broncos coach Mike Shanahan as the best running back in the draft, even ahead of Reggie Bush, but the reality is that Sammy Morris has as many 100-yard performances (two) in a Patriots uniform as does Maroney.

The Patriots would normally be stuck for the longterm in a situation like this, but the 2008 draft brings a fascinating wrinkle that could actually knock Maroney down the depth chart, if not hasten his departure from New England altogether.

His name is Darren McFadden.

The Arkansas junior and Heisman Trophy finalist is expected to declare for the draft in the spring. The Patriots, thanks to a brilliant draft-day trade with the 49ers, own San Francisco’s first-round pick. If the season ended today, that pick would be No. 2 overall.

Word around the league is that the Pats have scouted McFadden extensively and are fans of his game.

First of all, thanks to the 49ers for the awesome trade. Great job fellas. Next, I think we are all in agreement that the Patriots need to tighten up their defense before doing anything else, but if they can take care of the D through free agency, they can draft McFadden and set him up as Tom Brady's next weapon. Keep in mind that Randy Moss' contract will be up after this season and the Patriots could be looking for a big time weapon to take his place. McFadden may be able to do that with his talent to not only run the ball, but to pass and catch it as well. The Patriots, or whoever drafts McFadden, could easily lineup up McFadden as the QB in the 'wildhog' formation that he's grown accustomed to in college.

I have been saying for a month that they would take McAwesome. It makes sense, they traditionally use free agency to fill out the defensive side of the ball (except for line). He is also a gamer. I love McAwesome, and would hate to see him in NE.

I think the choice will depend some on what happens with Moss. If he's going to leave free agency, they may go with a wide out. Moss makes Welker, Gaffney and Stallworth better as they all get single coverage. Without Moss, that changes next year as none of that group have ever put up numbers outside this year that makes DC's stay up late gameplanning.

Patriots don't seem to need a great running back and have been doing this by committee for the last five years. Faulk, Dillon, Maroney, etc.

I think McFadden is a multi-dimensional weapon that the Pats could use in a variety of ways. I think the way he's been used in college has shown that he's not just a runner. If the Pats lose Moss, it will be a big loss, but they might just try to switch up the offense with a new weapon. That link I put in the story kind of said that Mr. Bill isn't happy with Maroney and could be looking for a way to get a new RB out there

Remember all the dump off plays they used to call for Faulk before he got old? That used to be a legitimate play call for the Pats, they would always call the screen pass to Faulk.

Now imagine that returning, with the deep receiving threats they have now (if Moss stays, and he will) and McFadden is the one catching it in the back field instead of a utility player that Faulk has always been.

Is it possible to go like 35-0 in a single season? They would be credited 2 or 3 victories for each game because of how lop sided the games would be.

Thank you 49ers!!!!

P.S. I love Faulk, but he is what he is, a loyal utility guy with average talent.

I've seen the Pats use that check down play a handful of times with Maroney. He pretty fast out of that backfield. It would be an interesting pick. Of course, there will be teams lining up for McFadden so they could find some great value in trading the pick for multiple first day picks(if he is not chosen by the Dolphins). If Moss cares about winning more than $, then he'll be there in the future. Like players in the past, I'm sure the Pats won't give the best offer to him. he says all he cares about is winning. I guess we'll find out if he sticks to those words.

Jeremiah, the Pats still use Faulk for that dump off screen 2-3 times a game and it is always good for 8 yards or so. I agree that McFadden would be explosive enough to break something bigger than Faulk can, but as it is I'd take 8 yards on 1st or 2nd down any day.

I can't believe they have brohm going at #5 in that draft

The GM said

he'll get picked wherever atlanta picks

In the first round? Seriously? I know Petrino is the coach there, but is Brohm even a first rounder anymore?
