Just when it looked like Kerry Wood wouldn't be back with the Cubs next season....he's back.
The Cubs and right-handed pitcher Kerry Wood agreed to terms on a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.
This is a very good deal for the Cubs since it is a one year pact and it leaves me wondering what exactly Wood was thinking. It was rumored that there were a lot of teams out to sign him, but instead he came back to the Cubs? I wonder if he was given assurances that he would have a shot to be a closer or what the deal is. I would think he'd take a two year deal with the Red Sox/Brewers/etc. over a one year deal with the Cubs.
For the Cubs, this gives them another hard throwing reliever to go with Carlos Marmol and Bobby Howry to close out the games. The one year deal is in the Cubs favor because of the history Wood has with injuries. As for Wood, MLB Trade Rumors is suggesting that the Cubs offered him more money on the one year deal, but this seems kind of a risk for him. What if he gets injured again and then he'll have to sign for less money next season. I guess he feels confident that he'll be healthy and have a good enough season that he'll be able to sign for more than $5 million next season.

The Shooter lives on....
Good news for Cubs fans, but I don't understand why there's even a discussion about the closer role. Shouldn't it be Marmol, hands down?
I don't know, I like Marmol in the 7th-8th inning role, plus he can throw two innings at a time. It's hard to say though. The Wood signing at least gives the Cubs some options and (hopefully) depth.
