Talking Hoops - Round Table Discussions from BlogsByFans

Thumbnail image for roundtable.jpgEvery once in awhile the good folks around the BlogsByFans Network get together to have a party some fun. This is one of those instances. I'll let our fearless leader, Brian, give his description of what this is all about.

The first week or so of November is truly a magical time of year for every die-hard NBA fan. Everyone's team has a shot, every cup is half-full, and 95% of the country hasn't completely forgotten about our beloved sport, yet.

With this in mind, we're going to try to educate ourselves here at the Blogs By Fans Network, as well you loyal readers. Participating NBA bloggers will be:

One of the huge benefits of a network like this, and reading blogs written by guys who know way too much about their teams, is you can get insight into teams you'll never get from the mainstream media. The idea of this round table is to glean a few pieces of vital info about the teams we all cover. Hopefully, we'll dig a little deeper and give you a few subtle things to keep an eye on as the season wears on. The other purpose is to provide a proper forum for Eddy Curry fat jokes, Shavlik Randolph homophobe jokes, Scott Skiles stick in the rectum jokes and all other forms of trash talking.

I'm going to fire the opening shot, with a couple of questions to each of the other guys, they'll respond on their blogs, post questions to everyone else, and we'll bounce it back and forth for a couple of days. Chime in in the comments sections if there are questions you'd like to ask/answer.

Before I get into the questions, a little note from me. This is a cool exercise that we are trying here, we have a lot of bloggers on the network who know what they are talking about, or at least think they do, so it's good to get out there and spread the knowledge. Now, the questions from Brian:

skiles.3.jpgLet's assume Kobe gets traded to Chicago, how long does it take for Scott Skiles to (a) choke him out, (b) get fired, (c) bench him? Honestly, Kobe is probably the worst possible player to land on a team coached by Skiles. Do you think this is a big reason a deal hasn't been made yet.

I think Skiles does none of these things and Kobe fits in just fine. Of course there are going to be growing pains, just as there are for most teams, but I think this is a relationship that would work out just fine. Skiles came to the Bulls with a reputation for being a tough coach and a coach who didn't get along with superstar players. Skiles had some problems with Jason Kidd when he coached Phoenix and to this day, even though Skiles speaks glowingly of him, Kidd still has a certain disdain for Skiles. I think Skiles is trying to fix his reputation as a coach who is too tough and as an ass to superstar players. He's already shown the ability to bend a bit with the Ben Wallace headband situation and I think he'd do the same with Kobe if he came to the Bulls.

I think Skiles getting fired if Kobe coming to the Bulls is the last thing that would happen. Skiles has built his offense on penetration from perimeter players and that's exactly what Kobe likes to do. Of course, now the Bulls offense is successful with a lot of ball movement, but that might not be needed as much if they had someone who could penetrate and score/get to the foul line...which they lack right now.

tythomas.1.jpgJoe Smith, Joe Kim Noah, Tyrus Thomas, Andres Nocioni. Every one of those guys seems like at least a decent power forward option, yet the position is seen as the main weakness on the Bulls roster (before Ben Wallace went down, at least). What's the problem? What's the solution?

First of all, let's throw Nocioni out of there. I cringe every time I see him playing the power forward position. As for the other guys, these are their problems:

Joe Smith - Too old, not good enough. Done and done.

Joakim Noah - No offensive skills to be seen. Energy will only get you so far in the NBA and right now that's getting Noah to the end of the Bulls bench. It's hard to play a guy consistent minutes when he 1) doesn't know the offense, 2) isn't big enough to play D down low, 3) has a bad shoulder, and 4) can't make a jump shot.

Tyrus Thomas - If it were a good thing to be in the NBA and lack focus and motivation then Thomas would be a superstar. He doesn't have any offensive moves besides, "dunk" and while that worked well for Shaquille O'Neal....it's not going to work for Thomas. If he'd just learn how to keep focused on defense and figure out a way to perfect a turnaround jumper he'd be a young Jermaine O'Neal. Until that happens....he's Stromile Swift.

What's the solution? Well, seeing as the Bulls didn't trade for Garnett or Gasol, they are almost out of options. I guess they could try to get Shareef Abdur Rahim from the Kings, but who knows what he has left after sitting on their bench. Sadly, there really isn't a solution at this point it seems.

Now I'm supposed to ask questions to the rest of the braintrust:

The GM from Arin It Out (Pacers):

1. Can you give me definitive proof that Danny Granger isn't an alien? I look at that guys head and he just looks like one of those characters on Men In Black.

2. With his shoulder as brittle as...peanut brittle, how many games does Jermaine O'Neal sit out miss this season?

Rickhouse from TUP (Bulls):

1. Do the Bulls have anyone who can guard a) LeBron James, b) Tayshaun Prince and c) Michael Redd?

2. If the Bulls never traded Eddy Curry or Tyson Chander....what's the record of the team right now and how is the team doing as a whole (historically) with those two?

SML from SML (Knicks):

1. If you had to guess which one of the Knicks players are gay who would it be? (I'm guessing Quentin Richardson)

2. The Knicks very well could be the best rebounding team in the Eastern Conference this season, how will they translate that to victories?

Brian from Depressed Fan (Sixers):

1. Have you ever heard Andre Miller talk? I firmly believe he is deaf-mute. Can you prove otherwise?

2. What kind of name is Shavlik and can you name the top five players in NBA history with that name (that aren't gay)?
