The Delmon Young for Matt Garza trade went through last night and while that may seem like a bit of a blockbuster deal, this actually sets up the Twins to do some huge things this offseason. I talked about this a bit over at Epic Carnival:
Also, by moving Jason Bartlett, their starting shortstop in 2007, this brings the NY Mets
into the Johan Santana trade situation. It has been rumored that the
Twins and Mets have talked about a Jose Reyes/Santana swap and now it
seems that they are one step closer to making that happen. If the Twins
are able to make that deal they would have one of the youngest and most
exciting offenses in the American League with Reyes, Young, Justin Mourneau, Michael
Cuddyer and Joe Mauer in the fold.
If the Mets call to inquire about a Santana/Reyes and SP Mike Pelfrey* swap, the Twins almost have to do it. If they were able to get Reyes to bat lead-off for them, look at their lineup....
1 - Jose Reyes - SS 2 - Brandan Harris - 2b 3 - Joe Mauer - C 4 - Delmon Young - OF 5 - Justin Moureau - 1b 6 - Mike Cuddyer - 3b/OF
They could then throw three of their 'pirahnas' into the bottom of the order and have a pretty tough lineup there. It wouldn't be a lineup that could overpower you like the Yankees/Red Sox, but they would be able to manufacture a lot of runs. It would also be a very young lineup that the Twins could build around.
Obviously, their starting rotation would take a hit with the Santana trade, but if Francisco Liriano came back healthy, he could team up with Scott Baker, Boof Bonser, Pelfrey (coming from the Mets) and Kevin Slowey to form a pretty good, young rotation. They've always had a pretty good bullpen, anchored by Joe Nathan, so they wouldn't have any worries there.
So, after speculation about how the Yankees/Red Sox were going to swoop in and steal Santana from the Twins, the best offer may actually be coming from the Mets.
*In this trade, as in most trades, there would probably be other pieces included.

This might be the best case scenario for the Yanks.
I don't see how the Mets do that deal. They have no one to replace Reyes, unless they were more smitten with Eckstein than they let on when they considered him at second base. And who would replace Professor Reyes Spanish Lessons at Shea during the games?
They don't have an ace either...which is more important, a shut down ace or a shortstop?
