The Kaz Matsui Sweepstakes is finally over and I've never been happier about the Cubs losing out in a bidding war on a free agent.
Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 reports had it first: the Astros have signed second
baseman Kaz Matsui to a three year deal worth $15-16MM.
That's a god awful signing and if the Cubs had signed him I probably would have thrown up. Matsui did have a decent year with the Rockies, but as you can tell from the picture to the right....he's probably gay and that wouldn't fit in with the Cubs (that's a joke). Ok, ok, he's Japanese and that's why he wouldn't fit in with the Cubs. Ok, ok, relax. He wouldn't have fit with the Cubs because they already have a second baseman in Mark DeRosa. To sign a player just because he hits left handed doesn't make sense to me and never will.
So, the Cubs will now move on in their quest to sign a left handed hitter. They'll probably make a run at the Japanese guy and maybe a low priced free agent to play right field with Matt Murton in a platoon....
Here is a scenario for you...What if the Cubs made a run at signing Corey Patterson to play RF/CF? Would you guys be up for that? I know Patterson probably wouldn't, but it doesn't sound like he's garnering too much interest on the free agent market. With the Cubs lineup the way it is, he could settle into the 7 or 8 hole in the batting order and play CF when Pie is out and RF when Murton is out. I don't know, just a thought....
I wonder what Patterson is looking for in terms of a contract....I've been looking everywhere and have barely heard his name, so it can't be much. I doubt he'd ever come back to Chicago, but I always liked him and it's a fun rumor to throw out there.
I just found something that said the Nationals are looking at him and hoping he'll sign a one-year deal to play against righties and play center field........other than that he's going to have to wait but it doesn't look like he's going to be expensive. I think the Cubs should at least inquire about him to see what he thinks.
