The Patriots Just Scored Again....Bad for the NFL?

By Jack Cobra  |  Comments (24) | Hype It Up!  |   Filed Under: Football | Jack Cobra Archive
12brady.jpgI'm going to jump into this argument about whether or not the Patriots scoring all of these points is bad for the NFL. It seems everyone has an opinion on it, so I might as well throw mine out there.

I don't care about the integrity of the NFL, the integrity of the teams, good sportsmanship or any of that stuff. I'm a fan of the NFL. I want to see points. I want to see players bashing into each other going 150 miles per hour and I want to see cheerleaders and not necessarily in that order. I don't care what the score is as long as the Cowboys are winning and I don't care how many points the Patriots score as long as it's a whole bunch.

It's obvious that the Pats are upset with the NFL about their cheating issue. Should they be? Probably not, since they pretty much admitted to it. Still, it has taken their team and the motivation of their team to a whole different level. Never before have we seen a team in the NFL score 35+ points for the first eight weeks of the season and I can't remember a time when a team was adding on touchdowns at the end of games just because they could.

I like what the Patriots are doing. I wasn't around back in the day when everyone hated the Raiders, but I'm guessing this is kind of what it was like. The Patriots have probably the most talented roster in the NFL and they are playing like it. We see so many teams play below their potential, that I think it's great to see a team actually live up to the hype. They have the best quarterback in the NFL and he's playing like it. They have the best wide receiver in the NFL and he's playing like it. They have the best coach in the NFL....and he's coaching with a chip on his shoulder. The Patriots went out and stacked this team in the off-season by finally giving Tom Brady some people to throw the ball too while also signing some stout defenders. They may be the best team we have ever seen in the NFL. Read that again. THEY MAY BE THE BEST TEAM WE HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE NFL.

As for the 'running up of the score'....life is rough isn't it? If you don't want the Pats to score...stop them. The problem is, the only team that can stop the Pats...is the Pats. That's not even one of those cliche sayings...it's literal. The only team that can stop the Pats from scoring is if they pull their players. I like seeing a team hammer the nail into the coffin and then proceed to put fourteen more nails in it just to be an ass about it. I think it's funny...to me it's entertaining and that's exactly what I want the NFL to be.

This whole scoring points thing is to the point of being ridiculous. They scored 52 points yesterday. 52! That's a lot and I'm going to say that's probably not even going to end up being their high point total for the season. There are probably some teams that haven't scored 52 points in a game in the entire history of their franchise.

I'm looking forward to the Patriots traveling to Indy this weekend. I'll be sitting on my couch watching it in HD as this match-up of 8-0 teams takes place. Two teams enter without a loss and only one leaves unscathed...that team will be the Pats after a 44-24 drubbing of the Colts.

The people at ESPN, who know a lot more about the NFL than I, put together this video on how the rest of the NFL is reacting, or is going to react, to the behavior of the Patriots.....

I don't really care about blowouts, I'm of the mind that if you don't want teams rubbing it in, don't get blown out. That being said, we aren't exactly talking about the most stable individuals in the NFL, in some cases. Brady's smug smiling on the sidelines and Belechick's insistence on running up the score something bad is going to happen to this team.

My guess is defenders aren't going to worry too much about shots to Brady's head and/or hitting him below the knees when they get a chance.

I wish Buddy Ryan was around, there'd already be a bounty on Brady.

i don't think the pats running up the score is bad for the NFL. i think two potential 0-16 teams and a disgusting showing in jolly ol' london are bad for the NFL.
i guess i don't have a problem with what the pats are doing, but the motiviation behind it bothers me. really, there's no reason for them to be mad. there's no reason to have a chip on their shoulders. they cheated. they got caught. now, you're mad at the rest of the league? and you're gonna take it out on the dolphins and 'skins? really??? look, this team is incredible, but i think people that see them as the best team ever are being seduced by the sexy points, the bombs to moss, the blowouts, etc. the only reason they're scoring more points than anyone in history is because they're trying to (and i don't begrudge them for that... do whatever works for you. but don't act like a victim). isn't their defense (particularly those linebackers) their dirty little secret? steve young's niners (not even the best of the SB teams) would light up that defense.
those raider teams that everyone hated had character (or so i've read. i'm a child of the 80's, hence my love of the niners) and the pats staff go out of their way to suppress any character from the team. it's all about the coaches (or rather THE coach). how can you have a team with tom brady, randy moss, rodney harrison, and junior seau, yet all we know is that brady knocked some chick and is dating a model, or something???
i'm ranting now, and have already forgotten my original point. i can't wait to see the game, though...

I guess my next question is...when will someone stand up to the bully? Is there even a team in the NFL that can strike true fear into the Pats at this point?

after playing the Colts, the rest of their schedule is on the weak side.

If Brian Dawkins is back by then, he'll break Randy Moss in half.

The Eagles will lose anyway, though.

the colts stand the best chance. i've said it before, but i really think these two teams have flip flopped. just a couple of years ago, the colts were scoring 98 points a game, and the defending champion patriots were flying under the radar and just beating whomever lined up against them. the best part is that, in all likelihood, they'll play again in the playoffs, regardless of who wins.
the steelers might have a chance. might. at the very least, they won't be bullied. i don't know if the ravens D is up to the task, anymore (their offense certainly isn't, so it probably doesn't matter).

Personally I hate the Pats, I hate Brady and how he gets to date super models and still impregnant hot actresses, I hate Belicheck and his gay ass cutoff hooded sweatshirt, I hate all of their obnoxious fans, I hate the gillete razors, I hate the fact that they get to wear the country's colors, but I can't fault them for being damn good and scoring points. Isn't that what you are supposed to do when you have the ball, isn't that the goal...to score points. They play good defense, and their offense gets the ball back and scores....welcome to sports...apparently the Redskins were supposed to have the best defense that the Pats faced this year so far, clear they were over-powered...I am very much looking forward to the Colts vs Pats next week, this week seems like it is beginning to have a "Superbowl" type feel to it, I'm waiting for Budweiser to bring out the "Budbowl" campaign for the weekend. These are obviously the 2 best teams in the NFL, and it should be very exciting.

The colts didn't have the defense back then that the pats have now....

grifter said

no, but (points aside) i don't think the pats have the offense the colts did, then.
manning, james, harrison, wayne, stokley... even vanderjagtchdh. all things being equal, i think they would put up more offensive numbers than brady, maroney, moss, stallworth, and welker. they just didn't do it because, you know... they would take a knee every once in a while. i realize few (if anyone) would agree with me on that, but i really think so.

I just wish Joe Gibbs would have pulled his team off the field when they were going to go for it on 4th and goal. It would have one-upped Belichick's chance at running up the score and would've shown just how pointless it was to go for the score there.

I have to believe that would have forced the commish to fine the Redskins for something there... that would have been hilarious though.

Well, I think the only place the Colts are better there is the running back position. maybe kicker too....i think wayne

I did like to see Matt Cassel score though, especially after being benched last week! Who benches the back-up in garbage time?!

That's what the Redskins fans in my area said all week.

The thing is, they're professional athletes. Most of you probably don't see the Redskins week in and week out like I do, so you don't know that the Redskins are possibly one of the most showboating teams in the league. From Portis with his characters, to the individual sack dances of each defensive player, or to the trash talking that Marvin Washington does even during a blowout. I was happy to see the Redskins get blown out yesterday, I think they deserve it and I think Daniel Snyder needed to see it.

If somebody wants to stop the show, they should stop it. I have a problem with running up a score. If a guy is beat mentally, if you have broken his will, then everyone sees it. You don't have to make a point about it. If you want to, that is fine, but it is base and low. Several years ago Manning was on a hot streak, and there were games when things could have been worse for the other team and Manning came off the field. In the year he broke the record he HAD to throw all the touchdowns he did. They were 4-3 in week 8 and every game was high scoring. He even threw 5 touchdowns in a loss at Kansas City. He also sat out the second halves of several games. He threw 6 at Detroit on Thanksgiving. Five in the first half, and then a screen that went for six to start the second half and he was benched right then. He threw four at Chicago (three in the first half) and was benched after the second drive of the second half. He threw 5 at Houston and sat after 5 minutes of the second half. The Colts were playing with some class and dignity. I don't care how the Pats play as my team plays with class. Perhaps the best moment was in week 15. My girlfriend got me tickets to the primetime Colts v. Baltimore game on Sunday night. Manning needed two to tie. He hit one deep to Marvin who blew past Ed Reed and it looked like that would be it. Then with a minute thirty to go the Colts intercepted Baltimore and returned it to the six. Manning came out in the kneel down formation. The crowd, to my everlasting fury, booed him. But Manning wouldn't run it up on Ray Lewis, his good friend, and I was proud of him. I loved that. I cheered and told people that they were fucking stupid, and when people wanted to fight about it, my girlfriend stuck em with a shiv. I was proud of that, too.

If Jack Cobra wants to be classless and see classlessness and give Tom Brady the reach around, that is okay, he is just trying to up our hits cause we getting big duckets for dis stuff now. I just think that they are running up the score because they know they have the weakest schedule in the league and eat well in the weakest division in the league. They still have the Colts, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore and they make more enemies acting like douchebags than they do friends. If nobody stops them, cool, it won't matter till january.

Bruce...the Pats are the best team in the NFL and it's not even close. This weekend is going to be very interesting. I like the way they play because nowadays everyone is trying to be all PC in what the score is and crap like that. Screw that. Run the other team into the ground, stomp on their neck and torch their town.

I'm tired of all this PC and chalk crap. Let's get some people upset. let's get some rivalries going. Let's get coaches talking trash to each other. The Pats know what they are doing right now...they are push, push, pushing everyone around. Until someone stands up and puts a finger in their chest or some knuckles in their mouth and says, "Not here!" then it's going to continue to happen.

It's great that your team is playing with class and dignity and all of that stuff, but it don't mean a thing without the ring and it looks like the Pats are well on their way to getting that ring.

As for the hits comment...I'm not even going to respond to junk like that.

Dude...it's 'there', not 'their'.

My attitude towards the NFL has not changed since Day 1. It's their for my entertainment. I find the Patriots and their antics to be very entertaining and I hope it continues.

If I was worried about the integrity of the league, the sanctity of the NFL emblem and things like that...I'd probably think differently...but I don't. This is the one season where I don't want to break down games and figure out who, where, and why.

Bruce Paine said

If that is what you want out of football you should have done more to keep Vince McMahon's XFL going. You guys remember what a piece of crap that was. If you want people being assholes for your viewing entertainment go watch rasslin with the other slackjawed idiots. In the professional game of football men are playing a sport they love and risking serious injury and potential reducing their life expectancy to do so. It takes a lot of effort just to make it into the league let alone perform at a high level. If someone can achieve victory at a higher frequency than another that is not carte blanche for disrespecting them. If someone wants to stop them bad enough, they will, and all the posing the Pats do this early in the season is meaningless in August, but they play on THE brightest stage and they should perhaps behave with more dignity.

Interesting aimless ranting, but the Pats are proving a point each and every week. They have beaten every team they've played without discretion and without a second thought of pulling back the reigns. I want to see 60 minutes of action and I get that with the Pats. They are playing the type of football most teams can only dream about.

This game is as much mental as it is physical. When a team whoops on your for 60 minutes non-stop it is going to have an affect on you and those watching the tape. It's kind of like if they would have let Mike Tyson continue to batter people when he was in their prime without a bell to end the round and without a TKO or knock down rule. The Colts are more like Roy Jones, Jr. in his prime....he'd jab and stick you for fifteen rounds. he'd make you think you might be in it but in the end you had two black eyes, a busted lip and a broken nose. It just depends on what you like to see. I prefer to see something that I have never seen before and may never see again.

The GM said

You make an interesting point about what the Pats are doing each and every week. But, I should say that the Colts are doing quite a bit as a team as well.

Tennessee was supposed to beat us because they are tough, Houston was supposed to beat us because of their new quarterback and they beat us last year, Jacksonville was supposed to beat us because of 375 yards from last season and they had this "newer, faster, sleaker QB", Carolina was supposed to beat us because the Colts hadn't won against them in 3 tries and they had a short week.

Well, I say to the experts, keep doubting the Colts every week. Then, on Monday, make your outrageous claims of how good you thought they were. Next Monday will be no different then every other day after we play. The experts will be stumbling over their words.

i find it odd that a lot of TV types that seem so disgusted when terrell owens does a TD dance have no problem with the pats running up the score.
what's the difference???

Jack Cobra said

Actually, there have been quite a few columns written against the Pats running up the score. I don't have ESPN so I don't know what they are saying there, but I'm reading a lot of negative things.

GM....the Colts are a good team, no doubt about that. I just think, in my pea brain opinion, that the Pats are better. We'll find out this weekend. If the Colts win, I'll be surprised, but I'll give them their credit. I've never had a problem admitting when i was wrong...it's rare, but it happens.

grifter said

yeah, i've read them, too. but only a couple of people on TV seem to be against it. the general response is, "if you don't like it, keep them from scoring." guess that only applies to "teams."

There is so much about the Pats, you boys no little.
This is a man's team.
They are all blue collar

They don't need no stinken

got caught and they had to

Coach Bilick of Ravens, the very next week said the Jets were cheating, by calling plays on the line while his QB was calling them to confuse his line.

The Colts, turn the heat up
in their dome and overheat
the football so it expands,
they got called on it last

This is a man's game, put
