Your Official 'Bash Jason Marquis' Post

jasonmarquis.4.jpgHere it is folks, your Official 'Bash Jason Marquis' Post. If you ever want to say something bad about Jason Marquis....do it here. I don't know what your issue is with him, but now is your chance to let it all out. I can tell that the Cardinals fans in the crowd have a lot of pent up frustration still, even though they won the World Series last season, so instead of littering each and every post that mentions Marquis with your less than witty comments....do it here. Let it all out, this is your chance.

I think I speak on behalf of all informed Cubs fans when I say that Marquis has been pretty much what the Cubs needed him to be this season, if not more. I can't state this any more clearly...he is a #4 starter. His job is to make all of his starts and stay healthy, and he has done that. No one expected him to win 20 games this season and to be honest with you, anything over 10 wins was good in my book. He will be on the Cubs post-season roster, but not in the starting rotation. He'll likely be the first long reliever out of the bullpen when the Cubs need him. He is a useful part of the puzzle that the Cubs put together at the beginning of the season. He's been good in the clubhouse and with his coaches. I have not heard anyone complain about his behavior this season. Actually, lately he's been helping out the young pitchers that have been brought up at the end of the season.

Look, I know what it's like to be frustrated and I know that you probably could use an avenue of which to get those frustrations out. This post and the comments section are exactly that. If you need more motivation, his stats for his tenure in St. Louis are below. Funny how a pitcher who goes 42-37 over three years can make you so mad, isn't it?

Year Team GS G W L IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA
2004 STL 32 32 15 7 201.1 215 90 83 26 70 138 3.71 1.42 0.275
 2005 STL 33 32 13 14 207 206 110 95 29 69 100 4.13 1.33 0.262
 2006 STL 33 33 14 16 194.1 221 136 130 35 75 96 6.02 1.52 0.289

I never really understood the angst either. His numbers are't great but he provided something that we have not had in a while. He helped provide stability in the rotation. He gave Lou less to think about. Unfortunately for him, his recent performance won't get him the nod in a must win situation but oh well.

Overall the guy is what he is. I think the problem the Cardinals fans always had with him was that he wasn't a "gamer". He always wilted under pressure and in the second half of the season. He has done that with the Cubs this season also, putting up a +5 ERA over the second half. He wasn't reliable mentally and that is the big reason the Cards left him off the roster in so many playoff series.

I know of a few instances while he was with the Cards where during a bad outing he would bitch about being left in the game. Competitors want to be in the game despite how they are doing. They always think they can turn it around at any instance.

I think before the season I told Jack that Marquis would get them a 13-10 or 13-12 record. He's pretty close to that so far. Hindsight 20/20 that would have been good for the Cards this year, but I'm still glad he's gone. Especially for the amount of money the Cubs gave him.

His value is different for the Cubs than it was for the Cards. The Cubs just need him to be out there every 5th day...the Cards...who knows what they were wanting.

Well ... It's more a situation of a ton of natural ability, great first half, terrible 2nd half and an inability to close the season out as started... '04 & '05 it didn't matter .. to many games out front. '06 was a crunch year which he failed miserably to deliver. I don't believe any Cards fans said he didn't have tons of talent.. but beware of the last 45. and I think I remember a couple of Cy Young twists early in the season.

In an extension of Jack's comments about the Cubs value, the market also dictated part of that money. If I remember correctly, there wasn't much of a supply of starting pitching in the market last year. Plus, the Cubs obviously had a strong demand for a starting pitcher.

Hey, at least he can hit!

I'm not disagreeing that he was what the Cubs needed this year. He filled that role.

He has natural ability, just loses the mental side of his game too often. His time was over in St. Louis. He needed to move on. Fans and management had had enough of his attitude and I would say that he had enough of management's attitude.

What Buck said..
I never said he didn't have talent, either. He just got to the point where he refused to follow the gameplan(much like Anthony Reyes this year), and it cost him his spot in the rotation. I'd be saying the same thing even if he was pitching for KC or Tampa Bay; it's not a Cards vs Cubs thing with me...
