Greg Oden Is Out For Season....

By Jack Cobra  |  Comments (10) | Hype It Up!  |   Filed Under: Basketball | Jack Cobra Archive
gregodenjersey.jpgWow....Now there is news that is going to shock the NBA. Greg Oden was supposed to go in to get knee surgery to clean out some cartilage in his knee and he comes away out for the season?

"Greg had an arthroscopy and a microfracture surgery today," team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who performed the surgery, said in a statement posted on the Trail Blazers' Web site. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with microfracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage.

For those of you unaware...microfracture surgery is not a good thing. There have been a lot of athletes who have never come back healthy after it. Amare Stoudemire had it a few years ago and seems to have come back and Jason Kidd did something similar, but for every success story there seems to be two horror stories.

This is horrific news for the TrailBlazers franchise. It looked like they had finally been getting things turned around by getting 'good guys' on the team and building for the future. Now....who knows what will happen. Will Oden come back and be able to dominate? No one knows.

Possibly even worse is that...no one really knew/knows how good Oden is. Obviously he played last season for Ohio State, but he was injured for most of the season. He's never had an off-season where he's been able to work on his game and get into shape while working out in the weight room. It seemed like he had a nice foundation built around his strong defense and his ability to score around the basket but microfracture surgeries take away explosiveness some times, so will he have to change his game?

There are a lot of questions right now, and not a lot of answers. I'm sure I'll cover this more tomorrow over at YAYSports, so check it out.

not that shocking. everyone at OSU knew he originally hurt it fighting in the Tet Offensive back in 68. portland needs to a little better scouting. Serves you right for drafting somebody that old.

They just interviewed his agent on ESPNRadio and he (Mike Conley, Sr.) said that Oden was told his knee was perfect before the draft and they aren't sure what happened or when.

gianluca said

maybe the knee got hurt when they removed his tonsils?

Oh and what do you expect Conley to say? "Well, Greg was hurt all last year and played through it. We didn't tell anyone because it would have impacted his draft status."

Jack Cobra said

they tested his knee, they do complete physicals before the draft. He even went through personal workouts with the Blazers and Sonics and came out A-OK

hey, you're cub post got linked at Deadspin today. I liked the dick joke jamboroo better

The GM said

Your Rookie of the Year...Josh McRoberts!! Looks like he might get lucky and get a roster spot this season now.

Jack Cobra said

McRoberts already has a two-year contract, so he has a roster spot. He'll probably spend most of the season in the NBDL as Portland still has a bunch of talented big men ahead of him.

I think Arvydas Sabonis will play more than McRoberts.

That dude had some wicked behind the back passes.

Sabonis, like Oden, was too damn old when he finally made to the NBA. He was the man in the old CCCP teams.

Joel Pryzbilla and Raef Lafrentz, please report to the Fantasy Basketball draft... you'll be needed after all....
