Cubs Taking A Dive

By Jack Cobra  |  Comments (3) | Hype It Up!  |   Filed Under: Baseball | Jack Cobra Archive
diving.jpgJust when you thought it was safe to breathe again....nope. The Cubs lost again last night to the Dodgers, who I think have some sort of a Jedi Mind Hold on the Cubs at this point. I'm not sure what the Cubs have to do to beat them, but they need to figure it out quickly since the Brewers are only a 1/2 game back and the Cardinals are only 1 game back....It was a pretty lackluster effort last night by the Cubs and that's kind of how I feel writing about it right now.

This game was frustrating because it seemed like the Cubs were hitting Brad Penny pretty well, but he held them in check by inducing five double plays. That's a lot.....Steve Trachsel had a decent outing before the JV portion of the bullpen imploded, so look for him to get another start or two. There really wasn't too much happening other than that during this game as all the buzz took place earlier in the day.

Lou Piniella is hinting at lineup changes (in September?!), so we'll have to wait and see what happens tonight. The Cubs are facing a lefty tonight who I've never heard of, so I'm sure they'll have to grind it out once again as they tend to do that against pitchers they've never faced. Look for Matt Murton to be back in the lineup in right field and maybe Mike Fontenot will be in the lineup since lefties are hitting .304 against this Stults guy. Since the Cubs aren't hitting home runs they are going to have to be overly aggressive on the bases. This would have been a great idea at the beginning of the series against the Dodgers since their outfielders have weak arms and the Cubs should have been going from 1st base to 3rd base with ease, but it's too late to worry about that now. Russell Martin is tough behind the plate for the Dodgers, but hit and runs work from time to time. One way or another the Cubs have to find a way to win some games.

If the Cubs can get a win tonight out of Ted Lilly and one out of Jason Marquis tomorrow, they can head into Pittsburgh on a mini-roll for a three game weekend series before a make-up game with the Cardinals on Monday at Wrigley.

In other news, there are 25 games left in the regular season and the Cubs have 70 wins. At the beginning of this season I said the Cubs would win 93 games.....that won't be happening.

I think a 23 game winning streak is a definite possibility. I also think I'm clever.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves with a win from Lilly and Marquis. The one Cubs fan I have to talk to hear at work has turned on them for this one night since he is friends with the Stults guy who is I believe from up in your original area Cobra (Plymouth). So, I would really like a Cubs win tonight to suggest that he never ever go against us again. I suggest that your next post be about how Lee is about to set a series record for grounding into double plays. He's been on quite a roll with those dp's.

If I don't write about it, I don't have to acknowledge it. Lee is quickly becoming my least favorite Cub
