Cubs Stick a Fork in Cardinals

done.jpgYou know what....kudos to the Cardinals on a good season. They faced a lot of setbacks this year and they kept battling hard. I like to see that. They weren't better, on paper, than a lot of teams in the National League, yet they stayed in contention until the final month of the season. Whether you like the Cardinals or not, you have to respect the effort they put forth....

victory.jpgThat being said....the Cubs stuck a fork in the Cardinals this weekend, and now the Cards are done. The Cubs did exactly what they needed to do by taking three out of four games and finished 11-5 against the reigning World Champs this season. I made a post about the game on Friday Night...and while the rest of the games didn't have the same drama, they were exciting nonetheless. After the late game on Friday, the Cubs came back and took the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday behind the pitching of Ted Lilly (and the bullpen) and the hitting of Alfonso Soriano. It looked like both teams were sleepwalking through most of the game as I watched in while working out. In the second game of the doubleheader the Cubs....well, they weren't very good. There really isn't a reason to run through this game other than to say...they lost.

In the series finale yesterday, Matt Murton and Geovony Soto were the hitting stars as the bench players got a chance to get some playing time. Murton hit a three run bomb off of Mark Mulder and Soto continued to tear the cover off the ball. Soto is putting himself into position to start at catcher for the Cubs next season....if not sooner. If nothing else, he's going to be a powerful weapon off the bench when the Cubs face lefties in the post-season. Jason Marquis told the St. Louis faithful to 'shove it' by throwing a helluva game on Sunday in picking up his 12th victory of the season, and his third against the Cards.

So, here we go. We are finally coming down the stretch...the Cubs left St. Louis with a one game lead in the NL Central. With only 12 games to go....they couldn't be in a better position. The Brewers are in Houston, and the Brewers are a horrid road team, so maybe the Cubs could extend that lead a little bit this week.

It won't be easy though as the Cubs host the Reds for three games starting tonight and we all know how the Reds kill the Cubs. If Ken Griffey, Jr. isn't enough, it seems like Josh Hamilton, Adam Dunn, Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo have made a living at crushing the dreams of Cubs fans. This is the first of six games against the Reds over the next two weeks, so it's important for the Cubs to get out and set the tone. Rich Hill is taking the mound tonight against Arroyo and Hill is 1-0 this season with a 1.50 ERA against the Reds this season. Look for Cliff Floyd to be back in the lineup tonight and the Cubs will need him to hit for power as the Cardinals gave the Cubs a glimpse of what will happen in the playoffs if he doesn't....A-Ram was walked three times on Sunday.

I leave for a week and it all goes to hell! What the F!

Friday night almost killed me. Great job by Ward in the 9th. Almost wanted them to keep Z in as the bullpen scares me. Of course I couldn't watch Saturdays early game because of fox and them keeping all the afternoon games off MLB package.

You need WGN in the worst way....most of the games were on there this weekend.

I hear ya. Miss several PSU games because of that gd B10 network and any Cub game not on extra innings. The negative is of course trying to explain all the new channel numbers and a remote to Mrs. Gianluca. I'll need a full week off from work with charts and graphs as it's like trying to teach calculus to your four year old.

Or...just never give her the remote?

I think the Cards' collapse can be blamed single-handedly on "OF-St.Louis". When his HGH news came out, the Cards (and his hitting) went into a tailspin of epic proportions.

Well, Cubs in the playoffs can only mean one thing... curse-ending time! First the Red Sox, then the White Sox... now the Cubs.

It was good to see them take 3 of 4. Also, they could have easily swept the series but things just didn't work out on Sat. I can't believe I'm going to say this but the Reds actually scare me. It seems like they always take it to the Cubs. I'm not going to get started on the Big Ten network as gianluca brought up.

The cards schedule this past month has been ridiculous. I think that has as much to do with their 'collapse' as anything. Really though, they weren't that good of a team to begin with.

The Reds scare me as well. they always seem to find a way to beat us.

When did you change your motto? "Where the competition is subdued"? What happened to the Mongoose losing every time? Did someone finally beat the Cobra?

Jack Cobra said

A couple of weeks ago...I got bored. Nobody, and I mean nobody...beats the Cobra. Except for Paul Shirley, but that was fixed.
