The Cubs announced that 2b/OF Eric Patterson was be promoted from AAA Iowa today instead of fan favorite Felix Pie. Curious as to what this means??? Here you go, real quick like:
- Soriano is going to be out at least 3 weeks. Last time he injured his leg they didn't call anyone up because of his ability to heal quickly. Since Soriano was placed on the DL he MUST stay out 15 days. Look for him to be back by the 24th (Arizona series)
- Patterson was promoted because he hits lead-off and has a lot of speed. Pie has been hitting in the 2 spot in Iowa and long term, the Cubs want him to hit there. The Cubs like Theriot in the 2 spot for now and if they moved him to leadoff it would cause problems because they lack many other guys who make consistent contact. That's not to say that Theriot won't hit lead-off at times. Patterson hits left-handed, so he won't be in the lineup everyday.
- While Patterson has played some outfield, he will receive almost all of his playing time at second base. The Cubs are in a pennant race and this is not time to experiment and see if someone can play outfield in Wrigley.
- DeRosa will be taking over RF with Jones/Floyd/Murton included in the RF/LF platoon when DeRosa isn't playing.
- It will be interesting to see how Patterson meshes with Theriot, his double play partner. Patterson hasn't been the best defensive player throughout the minor leagues, but he has worked hard to become better.
- Patterson, just like his brother, is a bit of a free swinger. He's going to strike out quite a bit, but he has a lot of speed and that's why he'll hit lead-off. I'm not sure if he's a better bunter than his brother, but that would be a pleasant surprise.
- Patterson probably won't play tonight (Monday), so look for Ronny Cedeno or Mike Fontenot to be in the lineup.
- Last, but not least....don't be surprised if the kid comes up and struggles and/or doesn't play much. He's not going to make or break the Cubs season.

Is fontenot not an option to hit leadoff? seems like he has proven himself to be dependable at the plate and in the field so far. I would like to see fontenot play more over patterson.
The talk radio guys sounded like they thought patterson would be in the OF more. But, Lou seems to have things under control. Injuries happen, hopefully the cubs can tread some water and stay around first place until they get back to full strength.
