Cubs Win.....Biggest Night of the Season Tonight

By Jack Cobra  |  Comments (46) | Hype It Up!  |   Filed Under: Baseball | Jack Cobra Archive
Thumbnail image for jones.jpgWell.....that was a close one. If you are looking for an exciting pennant race, you've certainly found one here. I went through the gauntlet of emotions last night as I went from being happy (because Soriano was playing), to pissed (Hill bunting), to calm (Hill RBI single), to ecstatic (Jones double), to content (Cubs win) during this game. Gianluca, you can rest assured that I did not cry. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to handle an entire month of this....but I'm going to give it a shot.

Rich Hill came out last night and pitched extremely well, it's a shame the douchebag couldn't get a bunt down, but he did make amends with his RBI single in the 7th. Hill has turned into another 'Zambrano' for me. The guy just kills me sometimes. When Z was younger I couldn't even watch him pitch because he was always messing around, trying to strike everyone out, acting all moody, etc....Hill is the same way to me right now. He has all the tools to be an elite pitcher, but it just seems like he's out there fooling around most of the time. Just throw the damn ball. You have good, if not great, stuff.....just put it up there and see if they can hit it. Anyways, I can't complain too much as Hill did pitch well last night as he went seven innings for the victory, while striking out nine.

If the hero of the night wasn't Hill, it was Jacque Jones for his game-tying double in the 7th inning after Cliff Floyd and Mark DeRosa grinded their way to get on base through a hit batter and an infield hit. You guys read what I wrote about Jones last week and what he's meant to the Cubs and he just continued that trend. Earlier this season you knew he would choke in a situation like that, but now you expect him to come through. Ryan Theriot put the Cubs ahead with a chopper/bouncer/hit/error/got the job done as Jones came around to score the go-ahead run. Then, Derrek Lee came up with an RBI in a clutch situation for once and the Cubs had turned a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead.  By the way, how nice is it to have Felix Pie as a pinch-runner at the end of games?? Very nice would be the answer to that question. Consider it rhetorical.

Bobby Howry came on in the 8th inning and got the job done after working through a 124 pitch at-bat to Gabe Gross, who for some reason I had never heard of. Ryan Dempster then entered in the 9th inning and closed the door as Cubs fans should now be able to trust him again....so stop booing.

The win puts the Cubs two games up on the Cardinals....what? Yes, the Cardinals. With their victory over the Astros last night, coupled with the Brewers loss, the Cards are now in second place in the NL Central. This brings me to.....TONIGHT IS THE BIGGEST NIGHT OF THE SEASON.....

First of all, Big Z is on the hill tonight. He absolutely must win. He's been pitching pretty piss poor (four p words in a row) lately and is due for an outstanding start. There are conflicting reports as to whether Ben Sheets will throw tonight or tomorrow for the Brewers, but either way....the Cubs must win. Second, Roy Oswalt is facing the Cardinals tonight. The guy is just plain filthy and should shut them down. He missed his last start because of an oblique injury, but it's his 30th birthday today so he should come out firing. On top of that, the Cards are starting Kip Wells and he's due to give up 12-13 runs tonight. If/When the Cubs win and the Cards and Brewers lose....that will give the Cubs a semi-comfortable 3 game lead in the NL Central with Ted Lilly taking the mound for a day game on Thursday.

three other points about the game Hemingway:

Howry was throwing cheese in the 8th. I after Gross' eigth straight foul ball I was praying for him to just change speeds a little. He may have thrown 15 straight fastballs to Gross.

I know Jones saved the season but he's still tough to like. The sideline guy interviews him after the game asking about moving from the two spot to seven and gives some cocky go ask Lou about that answer.

Third, the thrill of hearing Bob Uecker spin his baseball prairie home companion tales is over. His 15 minutes has been up since Major League.

oh, that was me not anonymous.

...the dude has been booed mercilessly for almost two seasons. He's rec'd death threats and someone even threw a ball at him last season, what do you expect? The Cubs were going to trade him...that was business. He's playing well....that's business. Whatever he has to do to play well I'm cool with.

I would rather hear Uecker tell his stories in a bar instead of on tv

gianluca said

alright, I'll cut him some slack but he's still French.

Here's a question for you. I only Comcast on the MLB package so I only hear Brenly and the other pretty boy. How much better is WGN?

Jack Cobra said

They do all the games whether they are on Comcast, WGN or WCIU. Not a fan?

gianluca said

This is the first year I've gotten to see all the games. I just assumed they were only on Comcast. I hadn't seen any games since the old days of just WGN and Santo. I forgot he's only on the radio. Brenly is smart but I occassionly pine for the days of the homerism of Caray and Santo. Also miss Stone.

Great write up Jack. I was at the game last nite, and going Thrusday, and this weekend. im preparing for the chunky, yet satisfying all beer and peanut shit that i'm gonna drop at the office on tuesday morning. i digress.

The stadium was hot as balls, i cant believe that Hill's curve was as sharp as it was with all the sweat that had to be coming off his hand. Anyway, I can't believe im gonna say it. but Jack, you're a douche for hating on Hill. I understand the love him/hate him aspect. 8-7 and when he lost those 7 he got rocked. I guess he has the lowest run support in the NL or whatever, but you cant blame the offense all the time. But come on you cant boo the pitcher cause he couldnt lay the bunt. Soup was throwing high fastballs that were flying past him. I was yelling at a bunch of fans for booing a guy who had just earlier thrown 5 K's and would add 5 more. Now, dont get me wrong, I wanted that bunt laid more than anyone, but you cant boo him for it.

Jacque Jones was boo'd his 2nd AB, i think he flew out to center...but when he hit the double in the 7th he was a hero. That has to suck. He's definitly not falling into the catergory of fan favorite here on the Northside, but good golly grace and glory (Four G words in a row...whats up jack) he's getting it done.

Ryan Theriot. all I have to say is he's better than josh fields.

Hey Jack...i might have an extra in the good seats for either Sunday or Monday. can you/would you want to try to make it?

Tonight is a huge nite. Godspeed.

I just can't accept Cubs players not getting bunts down. It cost us a game last weekend and it could have cost us a game last night. It's a fundamental part of baseball. I hate missed cut-off men and poor baserunning just as much.

Hill has a bat, he's supposed to know how to use it....especially with the way the Cubs offense has been playing.

I'll be out of town this weekend, possibly more on this later, but thanks for the offer.

Gianluca...Thursday's day game is on WGN, you should try and catch it. If you don't have WGN....where the heck do you live?? Also, go here to see what stations the games are on if you scroll down to current games:

Also, did any of you guys hear the 7th inning stretch? Bob Eucker was booed HEAVILY and when he was done. The Fans sang it themselves.

It was fantastic.

Klompus said

And HUGE! props go out to Jason Kendall. He hit a bloop single to left in the 6th inning, and hustled his ass to 2nd base. Rich Hill got a base hit to bring him home.

It's how a team plays when they are in a race.

He has earned a lot of respect in my book.

Jack Cobra said

I agree Kendall has been playing well lately...except for when teams steal on him.

Did anyone notice the obese man right behind home plate wearing a bright pink Cubs hat?

Cubs fans ladies and gentlemen.

Jack Cobra said

No, actually I missed that. He must have been on when I switched the TV over to see Mike McDougal blow yet another game

gianluca said

cobra, live in PA and my crappy cable company doesn't get WGN anymore. Only get the games on the baseball package.
Not every game is on for some reason.

Jack Cobra said

that blows. you should move.

Klompus said

The gentleman with the pink hat, Frankie...is an asshole. thats a hat from the 1990 Allstar game held at wrigley. he's known as an asshole and i've meet him compliments of billy z.

gianluca said

Cobra, I'll call when I get to town.

azkcal said

frankie & klompus,

the guy in the pink hat is NOT an asshole, he's a huge fan of the cubbies, probably the biggest fan they have. sounds to me like you guys are just jealous you don't have good seats like he does. i've met him too and he's an awesome guy. back off ASSHOLES.

PinkHatFan said

The guy in the Pink Hat you all are bashing without even knowing…is not only the greatest guy in the world, but my FATHER!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is probably the biggest Cubs Fan you will ever meet! I’ve doubt any of you have ever had a conversation with him, because if you did, you would love him…everybody does! So, take your bashing somewhere else. Cubs Fans by nature are about loyalty and pride…you guys just bashed one of the greatest Cubs Fans in existence…you should be ashamed and banned from the FRIENDLY CONFINES!

Jack Cobra said

Azkal and PinkHatFan....first of all, klompus sits in the sixth row so the seats are comparable, no need to worry there. Next....klompus has met the guy and knows people around Wrigley (I've seen him in action). If he says there is a rep for the guy...I believe him. Next, buy your Dad a nice blue Cubs hat so it doesn't look like he's just trying to get on TV when he's sitting there yelling at the ump and complaining. Also, he's not the greatest guy in the world....I am. Finally....thanks for checking out the site, nice to have you.

PinkHatFan said

1. This is no “rep” for my father other than he is a die-hard Cubs Fan and absolutely hysterical! Trust me; I think I would know…
2. He is not on his cell phone all game waving; trying to draw attention…he is actually there for the game.
3. So, no I will NOT buy him another hat…it’s from the 1990 All-Star Game…get over it!
4. All you Cubs bashers can take your negativity elsewhere…
5. Klompus…you have a problem with my dad…be man enough to introduce yourself before you start stating false accusations…
6. I’ll see ya in the playoffs fellas…

kim said

Don't listen to klompus. PinkHatMan is awesome. Leave him alone. Or better yet, go say hello; you'll see for yourself.

Jack Cobra said

Look, I think my own Father is the greatest man alive....and that's a biased opinion, just like yours. He may not be on a phone for the entire game but he is back there drawing attention to himself, which is annoying. This much has been agreed upon. Klompus, as detailed in his comment, has met Pnkhatguy and talked to him.

I'm sure he's a decent guy but when watching the game he's downright annoying.

kim said

He's not MY father, but he actually IS a great guy, and the biggest baseball fan I have ever met. Quick anecdote, if you'll indulge me: on my first day at his company, replacing a long time employee that he was very fond of, he told me "ya know, Ted Williams was a hard act to follow, but Carl Yastrzcmski made it to the hall of fame." Give the guy a break. He's a harmless fan, just trying to enjoy the game.

Jack Cobra said

Very nice story, and a true one. Sometimes his way of enjoying the game takes away from others enjoying the game, that's all I know.

Anonymous said

6th & 1st row comparable? yeah its comparable to the guy sitting in the 6th row! 6 is still not better than 1. wow, never knew that being the biggest cub fan ever gives you a bad rep... ok, lets just say klompus is NOT jealous of his seats, he's definitely jealous that pink hat man gets more attention than he does... if klompus (whose real name should be pompous) is smart, he should stop bashing, get off his cellphone, actually pay attention to the game and sit pretty in the 6TH freakin row. so pink hat guy is annoying because he's actually paying attention TO THE GAME?! he's not annoying, he's a FAN. what's really annoying are the people at the game talking on their phones, and worrying about what pink hat guy is doing instead of just doing what they are supposed to do at a ball game which is...WATCHING THE GAME!!!

Jack Cobra said

I sat in the seats with Klompus and you know how many steps I had to take to get to the first row? One. That's comparable enough to me.

It's annoying when he's yelling/screaming/jumping up and down at every call during the game. A real fan would know the strike zone and everything that comes with it.

Drop the pink hat (which I think is used to draw attention to himself), sit there and enjoy the game in a manner that doesn't annoy others and no one says anything to him.

kim said

He takes away others' enjoyment? Why would they let him do that? I mean, I personally find it annoying to have to pass beer and money back and forth for people that the vendors can't reach. But I don't let it diminish my enjoyment of the game. If you think a fan is overzealous, isn't it just part of the whole experience?

Jack Cobra said

Nope, it's not part of the whole experience any more than people fighting in the bleachers is. If you are going to be annoying, stay at home. When you go to the grocery store and some kid is screaming and crying because he wants Cap'n Crunch is that just part of the experience? Nope, that's just annoying.

Jack Cobra said

Also...if PinkHatMan would like to tell his side of the story you guys are free to email me and we'll set up some sort of an interview. I'm willing to give equal time.

kim said

Oh crap. My kid did that this morning... where's the blog for that?

Cubs fans ladies and gentlemen. Cubs fans.

To add to this nonsense: As a resident of Chicago I've had the same review about the guy from someone other than Klompous. By the way, who keeps a hat 17 years?

My dad wears a live rattlesnake as a condom.

I want to clean up the mess, I have created here.

First off, pink hat guy might be a very nice and a very good man. I'm not taking anything away from his Cubfan-dom which I'm sure could only be matched by me.

At a game once, he came late (2nd or 3rd) and made a production, no joke, out of kicking 4 kids out of his seats, requesting tickets and barking he's had those seats for years. Meanwhile, these 4 kids are crying and running away, his party (who were waiting at the top of the section) he yelled at to come down to his seats after he kicked the kids out. He paraded down with his party quite proud of his seats and what he had done.

A. were the kids wrong for sitting there? i wouldnt say wrong...but pink hat could have handled it differently.

B. he could be the greatest man in the world, but that was a first impression I got from the guy. maybe i jumped the gun on him as a person, but you can only make one first impression.

C. i take back that i called him an asshole, in light of all these posts. i dont have an angry bone in my body, but i think you can see why i had this impression of the guy.

to be honest, i remember when i was a kid and i moved down to the front row after a long rain delay and fell in love with the game and the cubs. i saw a little bit of me in those kids who he kicked out.

I call a truce with pinkhat man and all supporters of his because we need to be joining together at a time like this...we need wins, not to fight about a guy who wears a pink hat from 1990.

GO CUBS

Fragile Frankie Merman said

See. Klompus was right. The guy is a prick.

PinkHatFan said

After I told you the guy was my dad, you still had the nerve to call him a prick. Some class you have. At least I was raised better. I think I am going to take the high road on all this nonsense and leave you fools with one thought, “Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.” Oh and P.S. my dad loves kids more than anything...I think I would know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said

Klompus, Wouldn't you have wanted so sit in your own seat?

Overzealous he may be, but if you prefer a more genteel and polite society, maybe you should look into ladies golf. i hear they're looking for some fans.

Klompus said

Like I said, the kids weren't right for sitting in his seats, but he could have handled it differently.

I haven't talked to him and I bet he is a nice man. thus the truce.

Ladies golf is only enjoyable if they are playing in Bikini's.

Is anyone watching the Astro's destroy us right now?

Fragile Frankie Merman said

Just tell your dad not to stand up and argue with every pitch. He's wrong 90% of the time and blocking the view of about 42 peope.

While your dad was raising a whiny brat, my dad was out driving an ice cream truck covered in human skulls.

Harshy said

The thing that bothers me about pink hat man: he wears the same shirt every day. That is one smelly shirt with these Chicago summers! Also, he stands up to yell at the ump while everyone else around him is just sitting there. When everyone is standing cheering for a 3rd out in a big inning: he sits there looking grumpy. I guess being the biggest baseball fan means doing what everyone else is not doing?

JA said

The man in the pink hat is actually the nicest guy in the world. He gets nervous and anxious at cubs games, which is y he kicked teh kids out of his seats and yells and jumps during the game. He's a man who lives for the cubs, go up to him, meet him, and i guarantee you will find him enjoyable. I've been to hundreds of games in those seats next to him, and hes one of the best guys to sit next to at wrigley

Kris said

I can't believe you guys hate pink hat! I love him, and we always look for him. My husband and I wonder what's wrong if he isn't in his seat. My husband loves to see him go crazy, because most of the time, the fans are probably doing or thinking the same thing. Why all the trash talk, just enjoy the fact that the cubs are doing well!

BleedBlue said

I feel it necessary to stick my head into this for some reason. You can put me into the "I know Pinkhat personally" camp. First off, you will NEVER meet a bigger Cubs fan. The man lives and breathes for the team. He's at nearly every home game and has been for years. He has forgotten more about the Cubs than most people will ever know. Second, as for Klomps first impression of him, you really don't know what kind of day he was having. It's never ok to yell at kids, but I do know that if he was late to the game, something was wrong and he may have exhibited it poorly. I will say, he adores kids and goes out of his way to help and please people. Third, don't get upset at the way he watches a game. At least he's watching EVERY pitch. I think that's something that should be commended as most who sit in those seats don't.

We're basically arguing over who gets to the love the Cubs the most. That's one lucky team. Maybe since we can't kick the Sox when they're down, we're sniping at each other. Time to heal people and bring home the winner.

Klompus said

False. On the comeback win on Monday nite...he left.

so he didnt watch EVERY PITCH.

Boney said

all this animosity over some fruit in a pink hat... who the hell cares about some pink hat wearing douche that yells at kids in his seat?

Jack should do a society report card on the pink hat wearing man, and how it must suck to wear pink hats and be a Cubs' fan too. It's almost as bad as being a Lions' fan, only it's worse.

BleedBlue said

"False. On the comeback win on Monday nite...he left.

so he didnt watch EVERY PITCH."

Wow. Semantics. Very well...He watches every pitch WHEN HE'S THERE. There's no way you can argue that. Do you know why he left early? Comeback or not? He may leave early because he has a long ride home and doesn't want to get stuck in horrible traffic. He may leve early because he had to pick someone up. Bottomline, he bought his ticket, paid his money and can leave whenever he wants. Point being, you don't know him. Don't judge him.
